Because streaming didn't exist & dial-up was slow, having files on disk and walking them to another computer was often the fastest way to share.

A screenshot of a terminal showing the execution of the ssb-zk-proofs generate-qr command. The tool is generating a Zero-Knowledge Proof for a specific Secure Scuttlebutt (SSB) message (sequence 4). The log details the proof generation process using a halo2 circuit and concludes by successfully compressing the data and saving a QR code containing the message and its ZK proof to a file named qr-sneak.png.

A close-up of the terminal output after a successful ZK proof verification. It validates that the message is #4 in the hash chain and that its integrity is maintained. Below the verification summary, the decoded message content is displayed in JSON format, showing details of a git repository.

A terminal screenshot showing the process of decoding a QR code and verifying an embedded Zero-Knowledge Proof. The command ssb-zk-proofs decode-qr is executed on an image file. The output logs the successful decoding of a Secure Scuttlebutt (SSB) message and its associated proof metadata. The process culminates in the message "ZK PROOF VERIFICATION: PASSED", cryptographically confirming the message's content integrity and its correct position within a hash chain.

wrote #SSB #sneakernet tool w/ zk proof (Rust halo2 library):

- generate 1632-byte proofs on BN254 curve to prove message position in hash chain -> uses SHA256 constraints
- create QR code with message + compressed proofs

QR code is a bit big 😓

will post code soon, warning: not a crypto expert 🚫🔐

A screenshot of a terminal window with a dark background. At the top, a command is shown: jack@winesap ~/Software/stammtisch/stammtisch *(feature/sync)*% target/debug/ssb-qr list.

The output of the command is a table with five rows and the following columns: Seq, ID, Type, Timestamp, and Content.

The rows list various message types, such as git-ssb/repository, chess_invite, and hokuu.photo, with timestamps from July 20, 2025. The ID column contains long alphanumeric hashes, and the Content column contains JSON data snippets.

Below the table, a summary line reads, "Showing 5 of 5 total messages," followed by a new, empty command prompt.

Me: This data is important can cannot be re-created if lost, so in addition to making a local NAS copy I'm gonna do a backup in the cloud.
Computer: Okay.
Me: Progress-bar is taking ages to progress. I'll let it run and do something else with my time.

The #30DayFOSSChallenge this year will be interesting... I have very little left to #FOSS-ify in my life. I'm leaning towards the following goals:

* Contribute to certain projects (like OSM) to make them more useful to me
* Reduce reliance on hosting companies and either self host at home or […]

#EMFCamp got me thinking about #permacomputing and low bandwidth communities.

I’m thinking about an #IPFS-based #sneakernet protocol that allows folks to use USB drives like we use IPFS over TCP/UDP. But with graceful fallbacks for people with “just” an old windows machine/Android phone.
