SP 9504 at the Tri-City Society of Model Engineers model railroad in the historic Niles depot in Fremont, CA. This is a Scale Trains Models. The real SP 9504 was an EMD SD45X, SP Class EF642-2. Reportedly: it was built in 1971 to SP specifications as EMD 4202, builders number 36807. It was sold to SP in 1972 becoming SP 9504. It was retired in 1984 and scrapped.

Southern Pacific (SP) 2632 sat in the dark at Ozol Yard in Martinez, California as a freight passes behind on an unknown night in November 1972. SP 2632 was an SW1500. It's from SP Class ES415-5. Reportedly: it was built in 1972, builder's number 4608-42. Reportedly in 1997 it became UP 1201, in 2003 it became UPY 1201.

In a photo taken circa 1981, Southern Pacific (SP) 2598 is in Santa Clara, CA. SP 2598 is an EMD SW1500, SP Class ES415-4. Reportedly: it was built in 1971, serial number 4608-8. These locomotives were called "cruds" mainly because they were so prolific. SP likely bought so many of them because they were such fine locomotives. Four plus decades later, many of these are still working for a living.

On Thursday, September 12, 1974, Southern Pacific (SP) SW1500 2478 was at Bayshore Yard, in Brisbane, near San Francisco, CA. SP 2478 was an SW1500, SP Class ES415-1. Reportedly: It was built in 1967, builder number 33138. It was repainted with speed lettering at one point. Assigned UP 1082 but UP number apparently never applied. It was retired in 1999. In 2000 it was sold to Gold Coast Rail Services as 2478, leased to Brownsville and Rio Grande International Railroad (BRG) 2478. Current disposition unknown.

Reportedly: it was built in 1967, builder number 33139. It was retired in 1994 and sold in 1995 to Omni-Trax being resold to Minnesota Corn Processors (MCP) 2479 in Columbus, Nebraska. It was repainted green with gold and beige bands.

On Saturday, February 21, 2026, at the California Central Model Railroad Club (CCMRC) in the historic Agnew depot in Santa Clara, CA, my HO model of Southern Pacific (SP) 2575 crossed the middle trestle over "Mouse Creek." This is a Sunset Models "Prestige Series" factory painted DC Brass 2-8-0. The real SP 2575 was a Baldwin built SP Class C9 Consolidation. Reportedly: it was built in 1905, builders number 25493. It was scrapped in 1953.

On Feb 21, 2026, at the model railroad club in the Agnew depot in Santa Clara, CA, my HO model of SP steam 2575.

Reportedly: it was built in 1962 as a model GP20, builders number 5634-10, SP 7209, SP Class DF-617. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 4059 SP Class EF420-1. It was upgraded in 1976 emerging as SP 4107. The reported disposition of this locomotive is, retired 1993, scrapped.

Southern Pacific (SP) SD7 2716 was sporting improvised extended sunshades to protect from the early summer heat in Roseville, CA on Sunday, June 28, 1973. It was doubling over an eastbound train that was led by UP power. This is one of many scans I am revisiting with new tools and methods to obtain better results. Reportedly: it was built as SP 5309, SP Class DF-117, in 1953, construction number 18381, the first of it's class, and was built with 62:15 gearing, steam generators and signal lights at each end. Renumbered to 2716 in the 1965 renumbering, it was renumbered again to 1416 in 1973. SP 1416 was upgraded in 1979 to SP Class ES615R-1 1511. SP 1511 was retired and sold in 1995.

Reportedly: it was built in 1974, construction number 73625-07. Disposition: reportedly, it became UP 1295 and in 2000 became UPY 1295 and later became NREX Y1295.

Revisiting an old scan: Southern Pacific (SP) 1279 was one of the SP S6's equipped for MU operation. "Railbaron" said, "looks like the "Tie UP Track" at Homestead Yard (east end of West Oakland Yard) at Adeline Street." In Oakland, CA, Thursday, December 28, 1972. SP 1279 was an ALCo S6, SP Class AS409-5. Reportedly it was built in 1955 as SP 4643, SP Class DF-307, construction number 81430. It was reclassified as Class DS-607 in 1963. It became SP 1279 in the 1965 renumbering. It was retired A1978 and sold to Chrome Crankshaft. It was sold as Kansas City Power & Light Co 79 in 1979 and resold as Mid America Car Co 79. It was leased or sold as Continental Grain Co 79. Final disposition unknown. I am revisiting some old scans with newer tools and refined techniques. Southern Pacific (SP) 2128 was in Eugene, Oregon on an unknown date in the summer of 1972. The Baldwin apparently brushed pretty close to something judging by the cab damage. SP 2128 is a Baldwin S-12. Reportedly: SP 2128 was built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton in 1952 as an S-12, SP 1494 Class DS-114 serial number 75776. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 2128 Baldwin S-12, SP Class B412-3. The disposition of this locomotive is reported as: To GE/Chrome Crankshaft, to Koppel Bulk Terminal 76 which became AGREX 76. June 1988 to Metropolitan Stevedore reportedly number 1, scrapped in November 1995. Too crop or not to crop, that is the question. I am making these decisions on the photos I am scanning all the time. When I first took the photos I often shot further back. I only had a "normal" lens. Later, I thought of these photos as being flawed, as being too far away. Now, the loose cropping has provided something I had not thought of as being important then. That is, context. Looking back on these photos I see them now as environmental portraits. The great photographer Brian Baer used to call environmental portraits of people, "mug shots with a wide angle lens." That's what these are, only with locomotives. They show the locomotive in it's world. They are kind of like static action shots. Southern Pacific 2128 in Eugene, Oregon in the summer of 1972. The Baldwin isn't the only thing historical in this photo. All the roadnames on the boxcars shown here are gone too.

Southern Pacific (SP) F7A 355 at Roseville apparently in Rotary Service. Likely in the Spring of 1970. This may be my second train slide ever. Shot on Wards or Sears slide film. According to SSW9389 on Trainorders, "SP 355 was classified as a passenger unit, class EP415A-3. It shows up in the 1971 Annual as one of two EP415 units remaining on the SP roster. There were a total of 37 F units included in the 1971 Annual. Don't have the 1972 Annual, but suspect this unit was retired after the major failure you described. The SP was purchasing large numbers of the SD45T-2s at the time and the 355 was most likely traded back to EMD." "Topper" said, "The retirement date I have for it shows to be 10/72." SP 355 was an EMD F7A, SP Class EP415A-3. Reportedly it was built in 1952, construction number 17209, as SP (T&NO) 355 Class DF-9. It was reclassed in 1965. It was the last T&NO unit to operate in it's original three unit number when it was retired and sold in 1972.

On an unknown date, in September 1972, Southern Pacific train 118 powered by commute GP9 3003 raced past a group of Train Masters that were waiting out the weekend in San Jose, CA. SP 3003 was an EMD GP9, SP Class EP418-2. Reportedly it was built in 1954 as SP 5603, SP Class DF-603, serial number 19564. It became SP 3003, SP Class EP418-2 in the 1965 renumbering. In 1975 it was rebuilt becoming GP-9R 3186, SP Class EP418E-1. In 1995 it was retired and in 1996 it was sold to Progress Rail. In 2000 it became Western Rail (WRIX) 3186 rebuilt with a chopped nose. In 2006 it was resold to Kalama Export Co., in Kalama, WA. Current status not known.
