Good tiles. A thing Mouse see least on her travels. No more than a third of churches

Sanctuary
This week Mouse search for the #BestofTheRiverAxeChurches #Somerset. Here are three wonderful places of sanctuary #StJohnBiddisham #StGregoryWeare #StLawrenceWestbury
And so the #ScamperDownTheAxe comes to an end. A total of 16 churches spread across 28 miles over 16 weeks. And here they are: #ChurchesOfTheAxe (1 of 4) #StMatthewWookey #StLawrenceWestbury #StLeonardRodneyStoke #StAndrewCheddar
The #MouseFavouritePhoto from #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset just had to be this example of #GorgeousGateage. With the church in the distance this seems to capture something of the England in the mind's eye, rural idyll, rustic, gentle, calm and green TTM🐭
And as #FontsMeanFarewell what of the church of #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset? Another slightly untidy church which makes photography difficult in places, but certainly offering some interesting features. Mouse award a #MusVisit of 🐭🐭🐭
You might think that this is as plain as they come, but Mouse never seen one of these etched onto a font before #FontsOnFriday #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset
C13 octagonal font on replacement shaft and plinth (probably C19) #FontsOnFriday #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset
So good they named it twice? Well good enough for a cheeky closeup anyway, Mouse thinks. The carefully crafted and curly ironwork of the gates to #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #FerrousFriday
Saving the best until last. Some good sturdy wooden gates with (for want of a better description) curly ironwork inserts. All very lovely #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #IronworkThursday #Thursgate
Described as a much modified and now blocked Romanesque doorway, Mouse would be amazed if any more that 10% is actually post-Conquest if indeed anything at all. North of nave (surprise) #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #AdoorNoMore #DoorwayThursday #FrankenDoor
Niche and canopy above south door (two churches in a row!) #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset
If there was indeed a parvis room above the porch, then this must have been added when the room was removed (but as Mouse say there is no evidence for it). It is though a concoction of parts
This #DoorNoMore and the door below it presumably let into the stair turret, once giving access to a parvis room above the porch, although Mouse a bit uneasy about its provenance #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #DoorwayThursday #AdoorableThursday
Slighted stoup. East of south door. #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset
The bowl may well be in situ but it wasn't born with the top half which is #Spolia and quite possibly once served another purpose.
On another note just look at that pointing. Anyone feeling uneasy right now?
A full 100 Brownie points for being awarded a silver eco church award #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset. Minus 120 points for stapling (yes, stapling) the certificate to this lovely door in its chamfered 4-centred C15 surround. Yes. You can no longer see it
#BanSignsOnHeritageDoors
South porch interior #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #AdoorableThursday
Late C19 planked door in C13 moulded pointed doorway and delightful in its simplicity
Curious little door to nowhere at the intersection between the south aisle and the chancel. Perhaps once leading to a rood stair (not a rude stare)? #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #AdoorableThursday
Good morning! Here's a door.
West door to rebuilt tower #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset. At first glance it looks every inch the C19 doorway that it is, but look closer and the jambs are much earlier. Possibly even dating to the original C13 construction #AdoorableThursday
The deep splay and 4-centred rere arch of the single Early English light to the north of the chancel #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #WindowsOnWednesday
Almost like it was arranged #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #WindowsOnWednesday
Beautiful or interesting? #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #WindowsOnWednesday
West elevation of south aisle #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #WindowsOnWednesday
Really rather lovely roll and cavetto moulded pointed 3-light Perpendicular window with label and single (authentic) head stop (the other lost) and cusped #Ogee lights. Partially restored.
A C19 square single light with cusped #Ogee doing a passable impression of a C15 predecessor although with the curious addition of tiny glazed hollow spandrels and double rebate. On reflection...
#WindowsOnwednesday #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #OgeeLove
Closer inspection shows that the vestry is a late addition to the church. The east elevation impinges on an Early English (re-set) single pointed light north of the chancel and dressed stone replaces stone rubble #WindowsOnWednesday #WallsOnWednesday #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset
From a distance this C19 vestry is a seamless addition to the church of #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset with its coped verge and Decorated-style windows.
Popular Victorian pastime sticking vestries on churches it appears and with a good deal less sensitivity to the church than this
The porch of #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset is reputed to once have a parvis room although there is no internal structural evidence for this such as corbels or other support for joists or indeed evidence of a window but there is a stair turret between porch and aisle #TowerTuesday
Who would believe that anyone would actually put a close up of some tiles on social media? Well Mouse has and she think these are really very nice indeed #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #TilesOnTuesday
Mouse's metaphorical tile cup overfloweth. That's two churches in a row with actual tiles #StLawrenceWestbury #Somerset #TilesOnTuesday
