St. Monica shows us the strength of merciful love. She never gave up on Augustine, praying through tears. As CFMD brothers we follow her example: carrying others in prayer, trusting God’s mercy when all seems lost.

FRAGMENTARY EPITAPH OF ST MONICA, 408 CE. S. AUREA, OSTIA ANTICA

HIC POSUIT CINERES GENETRIX CASTISSIMA PROLIS AUGUSTINE TUI ALTERA LUX MERITI CUI SERVANS COELESTIA IURA SACERDOS. COMMISSOS POPULOS MORIBUS INSTITUIS GLORIA VOS MAIOR GESTORUM LAUDE CORONAT VIRTUTUM MATER FELICIOR SUBOLIS

In the tiny parish church of Ostia Antica, S. Aurea, is this fragmentary inscription written in honour of the mother of the Church Father St Augustine, St Monica. She died of malaria in Ostia in 387 or 388, at the age of 56, waiting with Augustine to return to their home town of Carthage. Monica was a lifelong Christian, but she married into an aristocratic non-Christian family and prayed constantly for their conversion, which must have been annoying to live with. Eventually Augustine went to Rome and then to Milan, where he converted and was baptised by St Ambrose: she followed him doggedly until she died. His friend, the noble Anicius Auchenius Bassus, consul in 408, wrote this epitaph for her. The fragments were found only in 1945, but the inscription had been recorded in antiquity. "Here the most virtuous mother of a young man set her ashes, a second light to your merits, Augustine. As a priest, serving the heavenly laws of peace, you taught the people entrusted to you with your character. A glory greater than the praise of your accomplishments crowns you both – Mother of the Virtues, more fortunate because of her offspring."
