Desire, desire, desire.
The longing for the dance

End of Summer
BY STANLEY KUNITZ
An agitation of the air,
A perturbation of the light
Admonished me the unloved year
Would turn on its hinge that night.

I stood in the disenchanted field
Amid the stubble and the stones,
Amazed, while a small worm lisped to me
The song of my marrow-bones.

Blue poured into summer blue,
A hawk broke from his cloudless tower,
The roof of the silo blazed, and I knew
That part of my life was over.

Already the iron door of the north
Clangs open: birds, leaves, snows
Order their populations forth,
And a cruel wind blows.

In a murderous time
the heart breaks and breaks
and lives by breaking.
It is necessary to go
through dark and deeper dark
and not to turn.

Over a lifetime I've written poems only when I felt I had poems to write. I do not feel apologetic about refusing to convert myself into a machine for producing verse. Sometimes I think that poets have become a nation of monsters.

The poet's first obligation is survival. No bolder challenge confronts the modern artist than to stay healthy in a sick world.

You must be careful not to deprive the poem of its wild origin.
