My tears, when they fall, are grief and frustration at the life I have lost, the life on hold, and the life that refuses to change.

My chronic pain would have many crying.
My missing tears are not proof it's better. It is proof of how long I've had to live with it.

I think everyone needs to ask themselves if a #stigmas deserve to exist? From #HIV to #mental health we should always endeavor to fight the #stigma unjustly attached to these conditions, we pride ourselves on tolerance and diverse inclusivity. It's time to make that a reality not a punchline.

had to get my Doctor's notes to apply for some student funding. This is some of the stigma people face if they have a condition and how crappy it makes you feel.

I was lucky to escape being homeless after a couple of months back in my 20s. There was a stigma back then which has only got worse.

A King’s Ransom
For Richard III

by Clare O'Brien

The scoliosis was too obvious, like the car park plot, marked R.
You were planted evidence, a harvest for history geeks.

Each pundit had their own agenda. The psychic was half in love
with your regal reputation. The scientific sceptics wanted proof.

The X-rays saw through you but they didn't read your mind.
Your spinal column snaked through their preconceptions.

Tests proved your provenance. An archaeologist ate his hat.
Medics laid you out, traced the echo of your humiliation.

They put flesh on your bones and your wickedness dissolved.
Your skeleton held them all to ransom. What could they do?

You were just some dead loser, a corpse with brains dashed out,
thrown across the horse Shakespeare made you beg for.

Here's a #poem for this week's #promptcombo #stigmas with thanks to Paul Brookes at @thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social
Kind of an ode to the late Richard III, to whom much stigma has been attached, perhaps thanks to Shakespeare.
Published in recent anthology 'The Body' from @rough-diamond1.bsky.social

Thank you Sue. I'd written notes for #Stigmas including this person.
How the poem came out:
I read my notes.
Turned out the bedside lamp.
Turned it on again almost immediately.
Wrote the poem in a couple of minutes, in flow.
Went to sleep.
(I don't often do this) 💤

Inside Out

She carries a stigma she created for herself
A fractured life arc, carried on her body
Inked-in pain that’s more a stigmata within
Pushing through, bleeding out a belonging
An identity, her identity, stamped in reverse.

The devil plays tunes backwards for you
So it is with the words of revulsion, possession
And compulsion, to rehearse and repeat
Over and over in the mirror each day
Indelibly marked as other, non-fixable.

Hello #PromptCombo and this week's host Paul Brookes @thewombwellrainbow.bsky.social for #Stigmas

This is a recollection from an episode of First Dates, Channel4

Decaying health—
death staring
from hollowed eyes
The pale rider begins
his ascent
scythe gleaming
not in menace
but in sympathy

Yet fates were sealed

Misinformation
silence—
media and politics
cohorting to erase
the Gay Disease
an entire generation
lost
to grief
and ignorance

Life expectancy
close to average
medicine
to prevent
further decline
lives saved
by scientific progress
But still—
words are whispered
too often
behind closed doors

Viruses don’t care
or discriminate
They exist—
to spread
But so does
knowledge
and compassion.

Magnified
you see the cracks
the dust
the blemishes
those stigmas
we carry on our shoulders
easily identified imperfections
under the glare of a morning sun
or on a shrink's couch
however with normal vision
beauty speaks for itself

Stigmata

In 1980
Arthur C Clark was granted
weekly,
thirty minutes on ITV,
as a burred proto internet,
poking about
supposed mysteries of the world.
So, Padre Pio
had half an hour for his ersatz stigmata:
all bandaged, bloody palms
and claggy vestments.
In the vivid era of The Omen, The Exorcist,
and pre the television watershed, he seemed an amateur,
a mere walk-on extra.

I remember soon after my R.E. teacher
telling us we’d discovered
that Rome crucified
not through hands,
but hammered wrists.

So, the real miracle here
the power of mind,
of a willed, skin-ripping empathy,
as from memory,
no one suggested any actual fakery;
though the Testament of Wikipedia
now appears
rather more skeptical
of this holy business.

I’m sure I read of Pio again,
much later,
when his silhouette
(or someone like him)
popped up
on a slice
of such passionately craved for
pareidolia-toast.

Living With Stigma

"Nothing changes more than the notion of what is shocking" Elizabeth Bowen, 1959

Accumulated with missing relations
in photographs of his grandad's family,
his Nanna's dropped dark hints. One occasion
on his regular visits his Nanna sees:

"You know don't you?"And how did he detect?
A photo of his Grandad's mam in a thick long black coat big buttoned up to her short neck
beneath a cloche. His Nana says she lived a spit88

from us. Whenever grandad's back we hears her
black boots on the gravel and, without knocking
asking for money she invades our parlor.9
Nana says she took lodger's at her lodging

House. Grandad never spoke of his dad.
Asked why
he would say "I'm not interested." Afraid folk would say "Stay away. He'll corrupt you by
being near you. He's degenerate, depraved."
