#SumnerTheatre #MTC My Brilliant Career. Re-seeing this brilliant show and showing it to Gilberto on Valentine’s Day. It was very good but sadly the force-of-nature star wasn’t feeling well so we got a substitute; she was great but after 6 month’s anticipation it was disappointing.

#SumnerTheatre #MTC Mother Play. An intense family dynamic from ‘60s to today: a Mother & her children revolve & evolve… Cast is amazing, costumes on point, a wordless scene (cj Jeanne Dielman) is a pitiless display of ritual behaviour masking desperation, and the last scene left me profoundly moved

#SumnerTheatre #MTC The Black Woman of Gippsland. An indigenous academic negotiates family+cultural expectations while researching the C19th myth of a white woman ‘lost’ in Gippsland. Andrea James slowly peels back European ‘realism’, revealing deep truths; the end is a breathtaking coup de theatre.

#SumnerTheatre #MTC A Very Jewish Christmas Carol. I didn’t laugh much at the comedy, which is a problem, but the play gradually opens out into a wider examination of grief and loss and I was extremely moved. Great design & performances, and a timely reflection on the importance of creating a home.

#MTC #SumnerTheatre My Sister Jill. The powerhouse combo of writer Patricia Cornelius/director Susie Dee gives a nice but disappointing picture of intergenerational trauma destroying family lives. This should have been as emotionally devastating as STC’s Fences. But it wasn’t.
