Issues of the Environment: Ann Arbor Mayor Taylor weighs in on dioxane plume Superfund ... Mayor Taylor has served as Mayor since November 2014, after serving three terms on Ann Arbor City Council. Mayor Taylor believes that local government's mission is to improve basic services and enhance quality of life. During his tenure, Ann Arbor has worked to accelerate road maintenance, modernize drinking water infrastructure, expand storm water detention, beautify parks and natural areas, and deploy unrelentingly professional police and fire services. Beyond this focus on the fundamentals, Mayor Taylor has led initiatives to promote non-motorized transportation; develop an unarmed public safety response program, utilize municipal land for 1000+ units of new, permanently affordable housing; and develop the funding, staffing, and political will necessary to establish and achieve a goal of community-wide carbon neutrality by 2030. Professionally, Mayor Taylor is an attorney. He is a partner at the Ann Arbor law firm of Hooper Hathaway, where his practice focuses on estate planning and small business representation. Mayor Taylor has earned four degrees from the University of Michigan. During his years at the University of Michigan, Mayor Taylor served as Editor-in-Chief of the Michigan Law Review and as president of the Inter-Cooperative Council, a 550-member housing cooperative. Mayor Taylor has lived in Ann Arbor for over...

EPA Adds Gelman Sciences Inc. in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to the Superfund National Priorities List CHICAGO (March 12, 2026) – Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) added the Gelman Sciences Inc. site in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to the Superfund National Priorities List, a list of the nation's most contaminated sites. “With this Superfund designation, EPA will use its statutory authorities to hold the company responsible for near- and long-term actions to more expeditiously address possible risks to human health and the environment,” said EPA Regional Administrator Anne Vogel. “Thanks to Administrator Lee Zeldin’s leadership, EPA is making good on its promise to the community to protect drinking water sources and ensure clean drinking water to families living in and near the community.” From 1963-1986, Gelman Sciences Inc. manufactured medical filters, a process that discharged wastewater containing 1,4-dioxane into surrounding ponds creating a contaminated groundwater plume. Health risks of 1,4-dioxane include liver and kidney damage and cancer. The 1,4-dioxane groundwater plume is approximately 3 miles long and 1 mile wide and has migrated into aquifers that supply drinking water. Currently, the company has an agreement with the state requiring them to pump and treat contaminated groundwater to lower the concentration of 1,4-dioxane within the plume, prevent groundwater use in contaminated areas, prevent well use within the...

Letter: A Minnesota climate superfund we can't afford Minnesota farmers operating in a globally priced industry with increasingly thin margins do not need additional input cost pressures. Yet legislators in St. Paul are poised to impose exactly that. This week, a so-called "climate superfund” was introduced that would assign uncapped retroactive liability costs to energy producers in the name of funding “climate change adaptation” projects. Minnesota agriculture - whether corn, soybeans, sugar beets, dairy, hogs or poultry - would feel the ripple effects on multiple fronts. Liability costs in the hundreds of billions will not simply disappear. They will be passed through to energy consumers, leaving farmers with higher fuel, fertilizer, propane and electricity bills. Producers cannot simply raise prices to offset higher inputs; commodity markets are global. If Minnesota farmers face higher costs, they will be undercut by lower-cost production in other states and overseas. No business can operate in the red, and farming is no exception. Minnesota farms will be lost. Export competitiveness would suffer as well. Higher diesel prices mean higher on-farm trucking costs, increased rail freight rates, and more expensive river transport. In a state that depends heavily on moving agricultural products to national and international markets, localized cost increases erode already thin operating...

Proposed Climate Superfund Act, Seeking Restitution from Polluters, Is 'Basic Kindergarten Ethics' PROVIDENCE — It’s not often you can say a piece of legislation is easy enough for a kindergartner to understand: if you make a mess, it’s your job to help clean it up. That’s the message climate advocates are bringing to Smith Hill this legislative session for the second year in a row, with the introduction of new Superfund-style legislation. It’s called the Climate Superfund Act, introduced by Rep. Jennifer Boylan, D-Barrington, and Sen. Linda Ujifusa, D-Portsmouth, and will charge fees to fossil fuel companies that contributed more than a billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions over the past 25 years. The bill directs the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to crunch the numbers to find out how much the state is spending on mitigating climate change and charge fossil fuel companies for their presence in the Ocean State accordingly. Aaron Regunberg, director of Public Citizen’s Climate Accountability Project and a former state representative, spoke at a press event Feb. 3 pinning the blame on fossil fuel companies such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Shell for making massive profits on oil and gas while directly contributing to the greenhouse gas emissions causing climate change. “It’s an idea so simple my...

What Happened at Times Beach, Missouri and Why Was It Abandoned? Times Beach, Missouri was evacuated and later demolished after its dirt roads were sprayed in the 1970s with waste oil contaminated by TCDD dioxin, which left widespread soil contamination across the town. After Environmental Protection Agency testing in December 1982 found dioxin along nearly all 23 miles of roads and a major flood threatened to spread it further, federal and state agencies bought out more than 2,000 residents, disincorporated the town in 1985, and completed a cleanup that turned the site into Route 66 State Park.

An entire town wiped off the map after roads were sprayed with waste oil. Uncover the toxic trail and how the cleanup reshaped Route 66. What part of this story surprises you most? #CERCLA #Dioxin #Route66StatePark #Superfund #TimesBeachMissouri
