Do you have a favorite backpack that is looking a little worse for wear? I did and here’s what I did rather than landfilling it. - a thread #sewsky #sewing #handmadeart #upcycled

Silk ties overlap filling the whole frame. Some are cut off, some have thrift store price tags. The ties are pink, orange, blue, gold, purple, red, green, aqua etc.

A kids’ dress hangs from a basement ceiling in front of sewing supplies. The white dress top features a neon sequined sea turtle in hot pink and aqua with large flower motifs. The tiered skirt is printed with hot pink polka dots and ruffly neon fish.
Sometimes neighbors give me damaged or worn items so I can make something new. Here’s a shirt that had some staining at the bottom that is now a cool twirly dress with a patched flower covering some beloved shirt history. The skirt is made of a few thrifted fabrics. #sustainablesewing is fun!
A small banner reading “Love” sits on a brown table . The banner is made of rainbow cats fabric with the word Love appliquéd in polka dot letters on a white circle surrounded by a rainbow rickrack border. A gold ribbon is at the top for a hanger.
Have you been wanting a little Love (banner) for Pride Month? I’ll have them at the Riverside Farmer’s Market on June 11. #artsky #sustainablesewing #loveistheanswer
#sustainability check: the roses/cream fabric was an upholstery sample and the white fabric were from a thrift shop. The fuchsia fantasy hydrangeas were a retired tablecloth. The bias tape, interfacing, and batting were thrifted. The ribbon was new or from a gift. #sustainablesewing #fabricart
A pile of incomplete “Love” banners including neon rainbows and yellow roses.
Might be overachieving for Saturday’s Trashy Market. #loveislove #sustainablesewing
Three appliquéd circles saying “Love” in floral prints sitting on banners not yet sewn.
Paper and fabric circles with the word “Love” in groovy lettering on an ironing board.

You might be wondering, what the heck is that? Well, it’s old jeans I made into appliqués I made into a clockwork orange bear wearing a hat and sunglasses that I’m now making into a shirt to wear to a sustainable fashion event for San Francisco Climate Week. Duh.

A closeup view of the collar and neck of a shirt. It is a pale pink lace Peter Pan collar with a button and thread to close it.
If ya wanna save money on lace, thrift old curtains! I see them all the time at thrift stores for pretty cheap. A little bit of lace adds a nice vintage touch, like here on my Peter Pan collar. Yes, I'll wear your grandma's curtains!

Sneek peak of my next project and something colorful is in the works…
I'm testing out some new spray dye on this fabric I thrifted from the Goodwill Outlet. If this works, it opens up so many more upcycling possibilities!

I've been busy learning how to make my first YouTube video ever! In this project I make a cute vintage style outfit out of an old bedsheet and thrifted baby blanket.

The easiest way you can save money is by not buying interfacing and just using scrap fabric. You won't see the interfacing so you can use fabric that doesn't perfectly match and scraps are free!

Here's a hot tip if you need notions like zippers, hardware, buttons, beads, eyehooks, and so much more... Take them from old clothes, purses, and backpacks! My grandma always said, use everything you got cuz you already paid for it.

Lil time lapse of draping the bodice for my @pfiofficial.bsky.social Sew Off challenge. The muslin I’m using here has been salvaged from at least two previous mock ups, and after this I used the draped pieces to refine the fit on my own body.

Bold blue fabric with large cherries and leaves, with red trim on a pocket and pretty good topstitching. In the pocket is a pair of classic Gingher scissors. Two D-rings with green fabric attach sit on top. This is a big tote bag in progress.
Finishing up a Market Tote today. This amazing vintage fabric HAS to be from the 80s, right?

A close-up of handmade scrunchies sewn from silky fabric in rich autumnal colours, including deep reds, oranges, and greens. The fabric has a slight sheen, and the scrunchies are gathered into soft folds, creating a voluminous, textured look. They are arranged on a pale fabric surface, with shadows adding depth to the image.
Scrunchie making day! Loving the warm, earthy tones on these. Lucky find while thrifting.

My first outfit of 2025 is done! The skirt is a split skirt style made from an unwanted fitted sheet and the top is made from a baby blanket I thrifted. The accent lace is all scrap I had from home.
I'll be working on a video next
