The cinematography is so utterly beautiful I’ve basically spent 90% of the movie in a trance. When the narrator talks, I remember that I’m watching a movie and it’s not as good, but when he shuts up, I go back into ecstatic John Alton dreamland.

With John Alton, this is so important. Typically they turn the contrast down so much you lose the chiaroscuro or up so high there’s no gradient. In this print, we get the best of both worlds: deep rich, blacks, sharp contrast & an ethereal light gradient in every scene.

I saw the unrestored version some years ago, typical eagle lion public domain print: grainy, blurry and flat.
This resoration isn’t just clear, it‘s 3 dimensional! All of a sudden we have deep focus in every scene! It’s infinitely more artful and interesting to look at!
