The solitude cracks underfoot like black ice, blooms like a frost flower, bites like the cold on the face. Every step forward is a plunge. A reprieve. From nothingness, yet into nothingness. No footfall is going to bring her closer to the warmth of companionship today, nor take her further away. It is utterly devoid of meaning. Sometimes, she would like to melt into the drifting windblown pyramids of snow, blow like icy particulate on a chill breeze. Be anywhere or anything other than what she is in the here and now. No toys to await her. No punch bowls. No smiling faces. No hearth to draw near. Only embers and herself, a self she has spread thin across this vast on a Christmas morning.
