The model in “Autumn Garden, Plum Tree” is Hanxiao Zhang (張含笑), a female member of the National Farmers' Association (中华民国农会) in Taiwan. Her elegant and leisurely temperament, coupled with the background of the back garden of an old house in Sanxia, adds a sense of "local lyricism". In addition to emphasizing the sense of a moment in time, a colorful taro (lower left corner) and blooming flowers are also included in the painting. She reclines on a rattan chair in a relaxed calm manner with her hands folded in her lap. Taiwanese artist Li Mei-shu attaches great importance to the depiction of Zhang’s clothing and body. Her blue dress has many floral patterns, combined with the chest pleat design and belt expression, all reveal the aesthetic elements for which Li is revered. The artist’s academic skill shine through the way he presents her body dynamically interacting with light, shadows, and color changes. Li was also a sculptor and politician although he is probably best known for his paintings and his restoration attempt of the Taoist Changfu Temple along Sanxia Old Street in New Taipei. The subjects of Li's paintings are depicted in a realist style and are primarily figures, landscapes, and still lifes. Even in the 1950s, when abstract art styles were in favor, his paintings still remained true to realism. Li’s paintings demonstrated strong local sentiments and his love for portraying local people and culture. He also loved to use his family members as models for his paintings and used photographs to provide an outline or base for his work. Li emphasized the characteristics of the people he was painting through details such as the patterns of their clothing and subject’s relationship with the background. Li was born in 1902 to an upper-class family in Sankakuyū when Japan controlled Taiwan as a colony which allowed him to study art in Tokyo for 5 years.
