#takeoffs over water can add an extra splash to the show.

A black bird with wings hunched over it is partway out of the river, its feet still under water. Behind it there are regular splashes indicating where it has been stepping into the water to push off. ƒ/18; 1/160 s; 300 mm; ISO 200
The #BirdOfTheDay theme by @alan678.bsky.social is #takeoffs, and rather than repeat an image I just used recently, here's a slightly out-of-focus and oddly lit shot of a cormorant midway through a water takeoff.
Cormorants sit rather low in the water, so taking off is a bit of a production.
Ops forgot there WAS another one .. a fun one!

The "tween" mallard&mallard hybrid did "take off exercises" before they tried flying ever. I never seen any of them do this till this past summer! Geese have to be taught how to fly.Ducks just fly. Geese parents have a lot of responsibility. #takeoffs #birds #ducks #BirdsOfTheWorld #MallardMonday
An almost-sharp blue jay for the #BirdOfTheDay theme of #takeoffs. 🪶
On the left side of the image, a gull holding a large clam in its beak, with wings raised as it takes off. Somewhat hidden against a backdrop of dark beach pebbles, a crow watches intently. Blurry in the background, a tiny wave is washing up on the rocky shore.
Unlikely to make it out with my camera today, so here's a favorite of mine from the archives: Gull, clam, crow.
