Testing the waters: can pumping chemicals into the ocean help stop global heating? To some it was a reckless experiment but scientists hope the dispersal of 65,000 litres of sodium hydroxide into the Gulf of Maine could ease the climate crisis

I found the skull when swam up Lode Dike (20.6°C) after #TestingTheWater for @TheBrecksLP at White Bridge #Boughton #Oxborough. Phosphate only <0.02 ppm but Nitrogen 1-2 ppm. River silty & murky. A few big fish lurked on the bottom - mostly Pike I assume but visibility poor.

Amazed to see Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo) in Wissey Little River (18.8°C). Some compensation for again dipping on Spined Loach. Gudgeon, Perch, Chub, Marsh Woundwort (Stachys palustris). #TestingtheWater Nitrate 1-2 ppm🙁, Phosphate <0.02 🙂.

For #EnvironmentDay took a @NatureMetrics eDNA sample from a small gravel pit lake at Cranwich (c20 years old in Wissey flood plain) for @TheBrecksLP @PondRiverStream #TestingTheWater project.
Good that Nitrogen & Phosphate both <0.2 ppm.

In the 4th Cranwich gravel pit I swam in, there was a mass of Common Toad tadpoles nestled in some algae which seemed to be a congregation of the spindle-shaped algae filling the water column in some of the lakes.
Did an eDNA sample of this lake.

Took our 1st @NatureMetrics eDNA sample in ditch at Secret Fen #CavenhamHeath for @TheBrecksLP @PondRiverStream #TestingTheWater project. Good that N & P both <0.2 ppm. Observed by Red Deer. Sand & House Martins overhead. (Missed White Stork, Hobby & Swift!)

Sadly, River Kennett from Kennett to Badlingham, sampled for @TheBrecksLP #TestingtheWater Project had high Nitrogen (5-10 ppm) tho' low Phosphate except just down from A11 (0.02-0.05). Chippenham Sewage Works outflow was off the scale, N = 10+, P = 0.2-0.5 ppm. #Chalkstreams 2/3

Just completed 3rd #TestingtheWater 1km square for @TheBrecksLP in #RiverLark (sadly Nitrogen v high 2-5ppm), Cut-off Channel (N high 1-2ppm) & adjacent "fen" (<0.2N). All <0.2P. Water Rails shrieked, Cetti's Warbler shouted & almost scythed by Hobby.
