I’m a week late with my #thanksbrett but just want to add my appreciation too — in thinking of all the careers that ODH has given space to and supported (including my own), words can’t suffice. @brettbobley.bsky.social maybe at least it’s now permitted to let us buy you a beer.
The ODH has been indispensable to the DH research we all depend on. Thank you for your vision and support. #ThanksBrett
So much respect for the quiet & impactful work of @brettbobley.bsky.social and the team you assembled. Historypin wouldn’t be here today without you. And personally, I want to thank you for having an expansive idea of the humanities, welcoming people like me from outside of the academy. #thanksbrett
Just thinking back on all the good work I've seen @brettbobley.bsky.social and the NEH-ODH team enable and support over the years. #ThanksBrett
#ThanksBrett and #ThanksJennifer ! Great to have worked with you both.
I missed yesterday's flurry of #ThanksBrett posts for @brettbobley.bsky.social's retirement, as I was busy prepping for the start of the 8th Scholarship in Sound & Image workshop—which only exists due to @neh-odh.bsky.social support in 2015 under Brett's leadership! What an impact Brett has made!!!
I missed the official sign off for Brett Bobley, but it would not be illegitimate to say that his work at the NEH got me to the job I’m in today. His faith in a young grad student launched me down a path toward being a real naval historian who does digital stuff. #ThanksBrett
#ThanksBrett a belated tribute to @brettbobley.bsky.social. I will never forget the generous invitation Brett extended to me to speak to the NEH team about green open access mandates and how to get there. We eventually had one, almost. The world will be poorer without you, Brett, at the NEH.
#ThanksBrett for the kind words. Yes, the ODH team did support important work by our grantees. But, alas, no #ThanksBrett re the Crocs.
Stepping out of the shadows to say #thanksBrett. @brettbobley.bsky.social’s vision for an NEH Office of Digital Humanities utterly transformed our wacky little field—& his personal integrity & everyday mentorship of staff & grantees showed us what public service & responsible stewardship truly means

Screenshot of a 2015 tweet by Jon Voss captioning a photo of NEH ODH Director Brett Bobley gesturing expansively at a podium "At the church of crowdsourcing with minister @brettbobley"; Jason Rhody has replied beneath the tweet "I'm pretty sure you have just created the source of an @NEH_ODH office meme"
Braved Twitter for @brettbobley.bsky.social's expansive gesture @ 2015's NEH-funded CrowdCon (ethical interdisc-humanities crowdwork)—birthed multiple friendly memes repping some of his strengths: active, sincere, kind event participation; generously welcoming all in; care for DH folks #ThanksBrett
Humanists are supposed to be good with words, but there aren’t words enough to describe all the things the amazing @brettbobley.bsky.social did for DH communities & ppl here in the US & around the world. I’ve reposted many of y’all’s #thanksBrett posts, but those really are the tip of the iceberg.
#thanksbrett Words fail me when I try to express my gratitude and admiration for everything good that @brettbobley.bsky.social caused to happen in his many (but still too few) years at @nehgov.bsky.social The humanities are stronger because of what he and his colleagues accomplished.
Worth a listen, for sure. As a digital archive project that has leveraged a variety of #NEH #ODH projects, including the Newberry Library's Atlas of Historical County Boundaries, we are grateful and inspired to keep on keeping on. #ThanksBrett 🙏🏼🗺️⏳

Our #DigitHumanities Initiative/my #DH Center wouldn’t exist w/out a @neh-odh.bsky.social startup grant for our regional network. It gave DH enough legibility at my uni to convince admin to support the DH cluster hire that brought me here. I wouldn’t have my job if it weren’t for this. #ThanksBrett
The Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (CDLI cdli.earth) would not be what it is without the generous support of the @neh-odh.bsky.social and its Digital Humanities Division. #ThanksBrett @brettbobley.bsky.social !
#ThanksBrett ! I use Perseus and Pleiades all the time. What a contribution.
@neh-odh.bsky.social (that is)!
So many ways he worked quietly, intentionally, that you’ll never know.
#ThanksBrett for your dedication to making the humanities better and supporting a robust research agenda in the US.
The NEH will not be the same without you.
So here's a fun fact about @brettbobley.bsky.social. He also makes kimchi. It is delicious. So good that I once had to break open a carefully sealed bag of it to eat in the office. Sorry, colleagues, but #ThanksBrett.
#ThanksBrett for understanding that the humanities, done digitally, needed specific lines of federal R&D and capacity building $$ to innovate, creatively address field needs , build communities, and foster open source and open access work. (We still need it.) 1/
As an academic that has spent the better part of a decade using Perseus Digital Lib, Pleiades, and many of the other digital resources funded by @neh-odh.bsky.social, #ThanksBrett
It wasn't fancy, with the cords taped to the carpet and the chipped conference table. But the review panels held there recommended a lot a good work. #ThanksBrett
Could not have asked for a better colleague in @brettbobley.bsky.social #ThanksBrett for making NEH a place where DH could flourish and your dedication to good government.
Best of luck, and stay in touch, especially if we can be of assistance in the DC area or further afield.... #ThanksBrett
#ThanksBrett for all you've done to bring cultural heritage into the digital world. Your pioneering work with a wide variety of NEH projects has increased the digital access, awareness & utility of our cultural heritage. It has been a privilege to work on many of these with your support & guidance
I never got an NEH DH grant, but that didn't matter. @brettbobley.bsky.social still called in the black copters to #MarksDH2010. The Digital Humanities wouldn't be what it is without Brett's vision, kindness, and humor. #ThanksBrett

Yes, indeed. #ThanksBrett and @neh-odh.bsky.social team members who have kept those of us in the field inspired, funded, and in community with one another.
