"Uptown Down"

4,381 seats with perfume piped through the floor, the Uptown opened 1925 where 12,000 people stood in line. Now tarps sag on the roofline & a lone passerby is visible where a parade once passed.

A vertical panoramic image of the Uptown Theatre facade on a gray, rain-soaked day in Chicago. The ornate terra cotta exterior — cream-colored, densely carved with medallions, pilasters, rope moldings, and layered relief detail — rises above a bold red marquee reading "UPTOWN" in large white letters trimmed with bulb lighting. Above the marquee, a grand arched window flanked by decorative columns anchors the upper facade, its dark glass long unlit. The roofline is wrapped in sagging white construction tarps — the most visible sign of four decades of closure and a restoration still in progress. Graffiti tags mark the base in red. Two SUVs sit curbside, their scale almost absurd against what looms behind them. The wet street mirrors a flat gray sky.
Imagine walking into a lobby nine stories tall, 4,381 strangers settling around you, an orchestra tuning up, perfume rising from the floor. That world closed in 1981 — a burst pipe, a landlord who cut the heat, and that was it. The tarps and the red marquee burning in the rain are somehow both an ending and a promissory note.

One of the many structures in the ROCKEFELLER CENTER complex in NYC is Radio City Music Hall. When Rockefeller’s plan to build an opera house fizzled, he searched for a new partner and found one in Radio Corporation of America (RCA), and the project was soon joined by theater developer Samuel “Roxy” Rothafel, who envisioned an unparalleled theater experience. The venue opened in December 1932 as the largest indoor theater in the world, a title it maintained into the early 21st century. A noted example of Art Deco and Modernist design, the theater itself is a work of art. The hall has hosted pop concerts, film debuts, televised game shows, and assorted television and award events, and it is home to the famous Rockettes dance company. The marquee is the length of a New York City block, as is the width of the massive stage inside. The four-tiered amphitheater holds 6,000 people, every seat offers a good view, and the curved arches and glitzy interior give the space a majestic feel. Over the years, more than 300 million people have attended shows in the hall, and more than 700 films have premiered there.

Rum from Eigg 2018. The last holiday before my lungs kicked off, when I was running the most I ever had. This was taken on my long run, on a gloriously sunny morning, not long before I got lost amongst a field of cattle.
