An affluent-looking young man walks a strange pale creature on a gold chain. Behind him two insectoid creatures browse in a lush garden.

Lore:

In the Savic Empire, all aristocrats are bio-mages and they want you to know it. While few use their magic for anything productive, it’s not uncommon to see little handmade creatures strolling after their masters. The richer the creator, the more helpless and ill-formed these things are likely to be. After all, nothing says ‘magisterial class’ more than a pet that can’t live for half an hour without medical attention.

But some creatures serve other purposes. This young mage walks his ‘pet’, that will later double as a listening device. With a lizards metabolism and a parrots ability to repeat speech, this little creature will happily sit under a sofa recording for a week or more. If the Savic Magistocracy are known for anything other than magic, it’s cut-throat scheming.

A museum-catalog like image of 6 different toy thralls.

LORE:

Toy thralls became popular with human children after the Poison War, and remained so into the 13th century. At the same time, thrall makers were developing their own style of toys for their own children.

Almost all thrall toys made by humans depict thralls in major form, in military or labour context (Fig. 1). Both Savic and Brairi cultures hold that major form is the 'true' form of thralls, with minor being something like a disguise or illusion.

Where examples of minor form toys exist, they show thralls with extremely human characteristics. Mutations and deformities are never seen. The aesthetic choices reflect late-War propaganda and illustrated books, which show the hero's companions as idealised 'good thralls'.

Exaggerated claws and teeth (Fig. 1) are standard, as are slit pupils (Fig. 1a, b). This last feature has not been recorded in thralls after the first generation created, and even those records are famously inaccurate, yet human media almost always caricature thrall pupils as snake-like diamonds.

Human-made thrall toys are mostly produced either by specialist makers (Fig. 1b) or mass-produced in factories (Fig. 1a, c).

By contrast, toys made by thralls for their own children are made by hand, and use any available materials. Charms such as snake-bone (Fig. 2a) and ribbon (Fig. 2b) are sometimes attached for luck. On the South and East war fronts thralls have more time and freedom, and can make more elaborate carved toys (Fig. 2c)

Unlike the major-form toys for humans, thrall-made toys usually depict an intermediate form between minor and major. These shapes are more popular with thrall children, who can identify both of their own forms in the doll. Most thralls have no preference for one form over the other, and the idea of one form being true and the other false is at odds with their internal experience.

2 Enormous reptilian thralls crouch staring into the mist, surrounded by ruins. A third in humanoid form watches with a harpoon over his shoulder.

LORE:

Thralls in the no man's land of the South Front, considering their next move.

Thralls were originally created by the transformation of human subjects. As a result they have two forms, human-like 'home' form and monster-like 'major' form. The home form has varying degrees of features from the major form, hence the vestigial tail on the small guy here.

Their weapons are simple harpoons and a rare twitch-gun. These guns rely on potential energy stored in cilia within the barrel, rather than gunpowder. Anything small enough can be crammed into the chamber and accelerated down the barrel to lethal speeds. Originally they were designed to fire various bullets each with awful biological effects, but at this late stage of the war they're in short supply.

In general the Southern Front is under-supplied, barren and nearly abandoned by humans. The few remaining human officers each command hundreds or thousands of thralls, while trying to wait out the war from the comfort of plush bunkers. Supervision from the Empire is minimal, and officers often act more like local warlords or petty dictators than members of any larger force. As the glory days of the war are long past, most are noble political exiles and fourth sons.

Two workers unload an insect-like flatbed vehicle. One is an enormous reptilian thrall, the other a thrall in his humanoid form.

LORE:

Biomechanical vehicles have long since replaced the horse and cart for all but the poorest citizens of the Savic Empire. The insect-like machines are created in liveworks; factories with both incubator vats and mechanical tools.

Although the aristocrat class maintains they are the only true mages, the workers in these factories are usually magic users. Liveworkers coax machines from their aurum laced wombs, smoothing malformed limbs and blooming their eyes and feelers. Once the living platform is complete, mechanics then bolt on controls, fuel tanks and the manufacturers emblems.

This hauler is being unloaded by thrall workers at a staging base near the South Front. Labor contracts like this were once reserved for humans, but corporate contractors now prefer to own their workforce.

A large reptilian 'thrall' rests on a bed of wormlike creatures in a heavy industrial train carriage. The desolate landscape behind is overshadowed by the looming hulks of broken down bio-machines.

--

Mining in Savic territory is highly regulated, but the badlands surrounding the South Front are not. Some antique rail lines are intact, if dangerous, allowing miners to move south. The booming trade along these lines is known as the Worm Rail, and their methods are illegal in the interior.

Worming is a rapid, low cost and highly effective method of extracting ore. Enormous, magically engineered worms are released in ore-rich soil. From there they burrow into the surrounding rock. Their digestive systems refine ore as they move, gradually filling their expandable bodies.

At full capacity the worms reach almost half a mile in length, growing lethargic as their short lifespan draws to an end. At this point the miners return. They summon worms to a collection point using either small explosive charges or deafening tonal blasts from the train itself. When the worms reach the surface, workers load them into the train as they quietly expire. Their bodies can then be processed at factories in Savic industrial centers.

Worming can be relatively environmentally friendly, when the number of worms are limited. Unsurprisingly, though, nobody is limiting worm numbers. Landslides and sinkholes are commonplace in worm-mined land. In some cases rivers have been diverted through underground channels, causing regional droughts.

Thralls are often employed on the Worm Rail as guards against frequent inter-corporate robberies. Or as the robbers themselves. As long as a worm load arrives at a port, it will be sold with few questions asked. What happens on the Front stays on the Front!

sketchy TLO portraits. The thrall on right is in home (humanoid) form, but its on the very nonhuman end of the spectrum. Nice robe tho! #theloyalones

Two titanic, vaguely reptilian creatures haul loads of construction materials in the background. In the foreground two superficially human looking men lounge on a rafter taking a smoke break. Closer inspection reveals many of the same features as the creatures in back. These are thralls, the enslaved laborers and soldiers of the Loyal Ones universe.
