Bernard's 2025 walkthroughs review.
This is just for radio or audio shows. Note to be included I must have finished the walkthrough in 2025.
#ThePriceOfFear: 6/10
Vincent Price is great but I found this series to be a bit middling overall. The horror didn't land right.

#ThePriceOfFear End of walkthrough.
That was the last ep!
Do I recommend?
Yes if you like things a bit slower and less perfectly formed than the greats horror shows of USA radio this UK show keeps to its strengths for the most part. It is never great but is engaging and Vincent Price is perfect.
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #21 "Is There Anybody There?" (04-Jul-83).
Case in point this ep is full of the unique elements I described above that this show needs in the absence of those tight USA plots. Also two old biddies in an old house always delivers perfect radio.

#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #20 "Not Wanted on the Voyage" (27-Jun-83).
This show works when its British quirk and florid language paints a fussy scene so allowing less punchier plots to be overlooked. However its missing here so this felt like a pale copy of #Suspense.

#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #19 "Out of the Mouths" (20-Jun-83).
Were this #Suspense the man being infantilised and the baby being intellectualised would've delivered horror.. But we don't see the latter and the former stops midway. I wish this show was more route one.

#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #18 "The Family Album" (13-Jun-83).
Having just seen Liz Frazer in a 1966 #TheAvengers ep it was a surprise to have her in my next thing!
A very fine tale possibly as I didn't suspect that twist.
Was Liz typecast as adulterous working class?

#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #17 "To my Dear, Dear Saladin" (06-Jun-83).
Didn't think too much of this. A vengeful moggie was seen ep #3 already back in 1973. The set up was very classic #Suspense radio but like all Price of Fears takes its time to reach its destination.

#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep 16 cont'd.
The ep is a slow burner that's hard to get into but is worth that effort. Like a lot of this show's eps it is elevated by the dialog and descriptive detail albeit not its plot which is slower and rambling. I especially liked the rope sound effect at the end.
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #16 "Goody Two Shoes" (30-May-83).
NINE years later the show returns for a third season!
Michael Jayston and Daphne Heard bringing the Who goodness.
A couple move into country house but it has got a beneficial ghost, the Goody Two Shoes.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jzcz...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #15 "Blind Man's Buff" (04-May-74).
Similar to the Peter Cushing ep, Radio ep #5, in that Vincent while on a train meets a quirky man who tells him about a past murder he committed.
I like how Vincent can't rat these murderers out to the cops.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1Qd...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #14 "An Eye for an Eye" (27-Apr-74).
This might be my favourite ep. It has a typical set up with some uncomfortable macabre moments. But I did not see the horror that arrived until it did and yep that was a scary f-ing thing to imagine.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBwf...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #13 "The Ninth Removal" (20-Apr-74).
A prudish secretary gets ultra annoyed when a tarty goer joins her at work. I liked the twist at the end even if the delivery of the twists in these BBC eps aren't punchy like US OTR would deliver.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxAS...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #12 "Specialty of the House" (13-Apr-74).
Adapts Stanley Ellin's short story (1948).
It's a decent macabre tale but I'm finding little suspense or plot in this series. The resolutions each ep are now very same-y so have gotten predictable.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iQ5...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #10 "Guy Fawkes Night" (03-Nov-73).
Fine ep.
Adrienne Corri in "The Leisure Hive" played a mother with a murderous son and she does so here. They might have hidden the twist a bit better but it was never going to be hideable really.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYON...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #9 "Soul Music" (27-Oct-73).
Vincent runs into a musical couple he knows but nowadays the couple hate each other and their musical shows are disastrous expressions of their lost love.
Was a bit laboured compared to other eps in the series.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGkz...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #8 "Fish" (20-Oct-73).
Vincent is holidaying in Sydney and gets an invite for a meal in Manly with an actress who went AWOL some years ago from a film they were shooting together.
Bill Kerr is in this!
Intriguing ep.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBEF...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #7 "The Waxwork" (13-Oct-73).
Adaptation of AM Burrage's short story (1931).
The problem this has is that it can't compete with the famous #Suspense version Radio ep #648 (01-May-56) which was an incredible one hander starring William Conrad.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s4M...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #6 "Lot 132" (06-Oct-73).
Vincent Price's love of art was key in his #JohnnyDollar ep "The Price of Fame" (02-Feb-58) so this is in that vain. Only here Vincent must solve the case himself.
Classic horror!
Liz Morgan wrote it and acts in it!
www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0rv...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #5 "The Man Who Hated Scenes" (29-Sep-73).
From a Robert Arthur short (couldn't find the date).
Vincent whilst travelling alone on a train meets the titular man (Peter Cushing!).
A two-hander with two greats of horror. What's not to love!
www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyCu...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep 4 cont'd.
This ep adapts Charles Birkin's short story "So Pale, So Cold, So Fair" (19-Aug-70).
I love when Vincent turns detective yet still plays himself!!
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6zi...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #4 "Meeting in Athens" (22-Sep-73).
While holidaying in Athens between Vincent Price meets a tragic couple the man of which he had worked with on "Theatre of Blood".
(I checked on Theatre of Blood was only made in 1973 so this is kind of an advert! Ya cheeky sod Vincent!)
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #3 "Cat's Cradle" (15-Sep-73).
Adapts Bram Stoker's short story "The Squaw" (02-Dec-1893).
Great ep.
I love that Vincent Price plays himself, a horror movie star, in these eps. So he just on holidays or knocking about between movies.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCMr...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #2 "William and Mary" (08-Sep-73).
Brains in a jar is a big OTR staple so this felt like an old #Suspense classic!
Adapts Roald Dahl's short story (1959). More famously this was later made in "Tales of the Unexpected " TV ep #1.03 (07-Apr-79).
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wsee...
#ThePriceOfFear Radio ep #1 "Remains to be Seen" (01-Sep-73).
Adapt's Jack Ritchie's short (1963). Vincent Price is really just doing the intro and some narration but he is excellent.
The vibe feels very "Tales of the Unexpected" or "Alfred Hitchcock Presents".
www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHMX...
There will never be the likes of Vincent Price again! I bought this audio cassette set when it was released. The whole series is marvellous.

9th movie of my #Noir DVD Collection
Not exactly special. The crime aspect is lackluster, the twists predictable and nobody is all that sympathetic. Pretty average crime entry.
