The Player [emphatically]: "The bad end unhappily, the good unluckily..."

The Player [emphatically]: "The bad end unhappily, the good unluckily..."

The Player: "That is what tragedy means."

Y'all, this writing is incredible. Maybe the best script ever written? I mean, it's singular. All the things one might compare it to are also singular, so it's, I'd argue (and read my stuff; how often do I argue this?) a singular work of genius.

"We aim for the point where everyone marked for death has died," #ThePlayer of #TheTragedians.

Also, later, describing in a #metatextual way, too, all tragic #stories, incl the 1 he's in, "The bad end unhappily, the good unluckily. That is what #tragedy means."

Guildenstern, ever the cleverer and more willing to confront: "Who decides?" i.e. when it's over

Guildenstern, ever the cleverer and more willing to confront: "Who decides?" i.e. when it's over

The Player is mildly affronted: "Decides? It is written!"

What he doesn't say, but what is definitionally true is, it's written by a writer. The writer chooses. But in the case of a filmic story, the writer chose long before the drama we're seeing plays out. Usually with the aid of speed or caffeine and lots of nicotine, or at least that's true in my case.

The Player: "We follow directions. There is no choice involved."

Well, but there is choice involved. It just was made before The Tragedians got their grubby, little performer hands on it, by writer(s). The Tragedians only follow directions, but authors and writers write the directives they live to follow.

Btw, from #TheTragedians' perspectives, this IS true, but this โ“ also has an answer:

The #writer chooses โœ๏ธ

That's w/ whom all the choices lie in #tragedy, #drama or #writing, more broadly, & esp #narratives.

SO MUCH worthwhile stuff to say about #creatives & #artists & #writing ๐Ÿคฉ

Polonius: "There's something in his soul..."

Polonius: "There's something in his soul..."

"O'er which his melancholy sits on brood."

"O'er which his melancholy sits on brood."

"Will be some danger, which for to prevent."

The thing I notice here is Alfred, who is in many ways a standin for trans people, gender nonconforming people, gender-performative people (like drag performers)... if you WERE to group us all (and I'm trans) under an umbrella based on our lived opposition to the 'gender binary' Alfred kind of represents us, I'd argue.

And naturally, Alfred is the one who is able to actually reach Ophelia and offer some substantive, empathetic comfort, unlike all the men in the room, who by the way, also try, but just fail to connect with her or reach her in any way.

It makes me weep. it's very beautiful ๐Ÿ˜ญ

A very poignant moment (for me) as Alfred, who always plays #women in #TheTragedians plays, reaches out & comforts #Ophelia.

Naturally, I'm inclined to read into this, but as a #trans #feminist, this is a very resonant moment for me, & I suspect for many others, if you clock it ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ๐Ÿฅน
