Has nothing to do with it extracting my blood. Seen yesterday on a zero tide. #polychaete #bloodworm #tidepooling

Sitka shrimp (Heptacarpus sitchensis) are common but often clear, and so getting sharp photos of them is quite challenging- and satisfying! These critters live from Alaska to Baja from 0-12 m down. #tidepooling 🦑🦀
An eight-legged sea spider - it is pale, pale yellow and has six segments on each leg - with each contorted leg making an s-shape. The body is small, the abdomen is small and narrow, and the head is so small it is hard to make out. It is clinging to the underside of a sandstone boulder.

I found my first ever sea spider while #tidepooling! This is probably Ammothea hilgendorfi. Pycnogonids are not arachnids, and are traditionally considered chelicerates, but may be an even earlier arthropod branch. Sunset Cliffs, San Diego. 🦑🦀
The head of a baby Navanax - it is mostly black with some reflective blue patches, orange stripes, and many small yellow polka dots. The head is shaped like a chisel.

I spotted a baby Navanax sea slug (N. inermis) last week #tidepooling - only 2 cm long; very little blue, yellow spots more orange. These are opisthobranch slugs, related to sea hares, and hunt for and eat their nudibranch cousins (completely separate group of sea slugs!). San Diego, CA. #socal 🦑🦀
Painted Topshell, a lifer and quite a few live ones found, what a stunning species
Broad-clawed or Hairy Porcelain Crab, about 60-100 individuals seen over 2 days
Gracile Sea Spider, 1 found on the first day and followed up by 5+ more today
Side-gilled Seaslug, 2 or 3 found
Rock Goby
Worm Pipefish, 12+ individuals found today
Velvet Crab, probably at least 25+ seen over two days
Green Sea Urchins, 6+ found over the 2 days
A split image showing the flipped over rock on the left, and on the right, a macro shot of a light purple sea slug with three yellow stripes and a yellow and white stripe around its margins.
#worldwildlifeday A couple of days ago I tried flipping rocks while #tidepooling... and found my favorite #socal nudibranch (sea slug), MacFarland's chromodorid (Felimida macfarlandi). 🦑🦀

Cowries, fish and sea slug species are always a delight. Fish were particularly conspicuous in the torch light, with 20+ of 3 species seen.

Reminder! Our tide pools are magical, but it is important to practice proper tide pooling etiquette. You can follow some simple rules to keep yourself and the tide pool creatures safe and happy. 🐚 🦀 #tidepooling #californiacoast

#tidepooling In October I finally saw my first Hedgpeth's sapsuckers (Elysia hedgpethi). These are not nudibranchs or seahares, but are sacoglossans! They are easily found on the algae Codium (aka dead mans fingers), which they eat. 🦑🦀

Last month I squeezed in some tidepooling during the king tides and left the beach at Laguna (OC) just an hour before my cousin's rehearsal dinner - and photographed this golden little beauty: a woolly sculpin, Clinocottus analis - my best fish photo taken during #tidepooling! 🦑🦀
Photo of the Creature, the Mastodon stuffed toy, sitting by the sea in a rocky tide pool area during a late afternoon. In the foreground, the Creature is sitting on a folded black neoprene jacket on top of some golden rockweed–encrusted rocks, looking towards a tide pool that has formed among the rocks in front of them. In the background, the setting sun's soft glow lights up a calm bay at the foot of steep, sandy hills lined with palm trees.
The Creature went tidepooling! 🌅 🌊🐚

Another new species for me during #tidepooling before my cousin's wedding in Laguna Beach, CA: a seal doto nudibranch, Doto kya - perhaps 4-5 mm long. Dotos are tiny bryozoan eating nudibranchs with paired cerata shaped like clusters of grapes. 🦀🦑
A tiny white and orange sea slug with two pairs of antennae on its face; the body is a white cream color and the cerata are bright orange and football shaped, and closely spaced.

#tidepooling Last month my cousin got married in Laguna Beach during king tides, so I snuck out just before the rehearsal dinner and saw a bunch of new critters! Here's a branched dendronotid nudibranch (~5 mm long), Dendronotus frondosus - a new one for me! 🦀🦑
