#TimeTravelAuthors 29 snippet (now)

She turned her head towards the talker, her mouth still covered by his fingers – which was only good, because she would have screamed for sure as she looked into the now definitely NOT dead eyes of the boy they had just found lying on the ground.

“I don’t know.” Vera remained rooted to the spot. “Shouldn’t I be here for returning? Jules always returns after an hour, right? So I should too?”
Again, an exchange of glances she did not like at all.
“We’ve got time,” Jules reassured her. “Mind you, time passes differently here. It’s an hour back home, but here, it’s more like two. Plenty of time.”
“Two hours? Time passes differently?” Vera repeated, unbelieving.
Philippa smiled at her, the first real smile Vera saw on the girl. It suddenly occurred to her that for being Jules’ older sister, she looked quite young, more like her own age.
“Yes, time passes very differently here,” Philippa said. “Faster on the one hand, and much, much slower on the other. This is the center of time, that’s why. But come with me, I’ll show you. I know you won’t believe me now. I at least couldn’t believe it until I had seen it with my own eyes.”

What does someone else in the story think of you, Jules?

But I didn't choose this! I'm doing the best I can!

“Why is it so dark?” she whimpered.
“Because Cai’s most likely shut the door and keeps watch outside.” Slowly, his eyes were adjusting. Some slivers of light fell through the cracks of the door, letting him see the outline of the girl. Her hair had come undone and tumbled around her face. He could feel her trembling.
“It’s alright, we’re back,” he tried to soothe her. “You’re ok. You’re fine.”
“No, I’m not!” she snapped. “Apparently, I just died and went to the center of time, and watched the annihilation of Nagasaki, and Woodstock, and you…” A sob broke her voice.
He rubbed her back, but she only went stiff.
“I want out,” she sniffled. And then louder, “Do you hear me? I want out!”

"Ahem." *blushes* "I'd say Angel, but you know, recently this girl entered my life, and now, um, I really do like Vera... like... a lot?"

Something weird you've experienced?

"To die and wake up at the center of time is by far the weirdest thing that ever happened to me. And then to die again in order to return..."

Why are you important to the story, Jules?

"Wtf? Without me, there wouldn't be a story! My siblings would have thought Philippa died or disappeared like our parents. Vera would have never gone to the center of time! Without me..."

We get it. You're one of the MC.

Jules, however, quickly checked the logs and grinned.
“Put this on.” He handed her a couple of brass armbands and a set of earphones. “This plugs you into the system. Let’s leave this gruesome scene and go to something more pleasant. Ever wanted to see what Woodstock was truly like?”
Vera found that her hands were shaking, but her curiosity was bigger than her fear. The bands snapped around her wrists with an ease that startled her. The earphones were silent, but Jules manipulated the panel again, and suddenly she saw a big, muddy field, and the scratchy voice of Janis Joplin filled her ears.

“There are some laws to time travel, and one is that you cannot influence anything that is connected to your own past. Since you exist, you can’t un-exist yourself, ok? This is not Back to the Future.”
“But you changed their past!”
“They missed out on a kiss. That’s not a big deal, is it? I didn’t exactly stop the man who threw the bomb on Nagasaki. I couldn’t if I tried!”

No, not really. There certainly isn't any divine intervention. It's all science (albeit very, very advanced science 😅)

“I don’t care why he didn’t come up with it earlier,” Jules declared. “What’s done is done. Let’s focus on now. What are these two times that are coming up?”
“One is Hamburg, mid-nineteenth century,” Philippa sounded serious. “It is right around the time of the great fire. There’s a smaller one a couple years earlier too.”
“I’m very much in favor of the second option,” Angel piped up.
“That is not the real second option, it is just a small spike,” Philippa countered. “The real second spike is twelfth century, Levant. The area around Jerusalem. We’re talking Second Crusade.”
Silence followed her words. Cai cleared his throat.
“Don’t you have something in store that doesn’t involve mortal danger?” he snapped.

3 Timelines: Earth Time, Chrono Time, Life Time.

Chrono and Life Time keep running. The only time Jules and Vera can travel is Earth Time, and only once. They don't get do-overs.
Plus, life still goes on.

Tone? Not sure I can answer that.
A mixture of hopeful yet realistic, dramatic yet fun, sweet yet sometimes sour.

What it is not: grim.

Cover of "Time Curves"
Background blue color gradient with some petrol, plus light curves, like a slow motion shot of a starry sky. In front of it, pale, a clock face. At the top the author's name: Anna K. Thomas. Below it the title in italics. Below that, a white silhouette of a girl and a boy, looking at each other, but as if walking. Light streams from their joined hands.
At the bottom the subtitle: "The Travel of Jules and Vera"

#TimeTravelAuthors 7: Smartest character?

Angel is gifted in a logical, analytical way. Philippa is smart in deducting things.

Jules and Vera are both only average in comparison.

Missed Day 3 - aah!! Too late now. Day 5: How many people are aware of time travel in your story?

Quite a few: All of the Laikas siblings (5), Vera, Nolene, and the two men at the center of time.
Plus a few people Jules and Vera don't know until... 😈

It's unfair that my little brother is the one who travels to the center of time to our lost sister.
For that, he keeps dying - and he has been doing that for years!
Fine, now a girl is involved, and he's better equipped to deal with that.
Still. I'm the older.

I'm no fan of the evil corporation thing. Unless you count the committee of time as a corporation (which wouldn't be quite correct), there are none in this story.

#TimeTravelAuthors June 9: Costumes?

Vera & Jules are lucky to draw from the stores at the center of time. They also have Philippa, who does the research and picks out adequate clothing for them.

Vera could have done without the big skirts of 1840, though 😂

His clothes were the same – a simple jacket, jeans. Mud streaked across the side of his face, where he had touched the wet earth. But his eyes were focused, pleading, and very blue.
“Please don’t scream?” he repeated.
She nodded, staring. He slowly lowered his hand, and instead of yelling like any sensible person, Vera merely blurted out, “But you’re dead!”

#TimeTravelAuthors June 5. Do/could any of your characters ever meet themselves?

Tonton claims they can't, the portal wouldn't allow it. They only get one shot at each time they travel to.
