“*Sprichst du deutsch*?” he asked. I assumed it was German. I shook my head. “Sorry.” He pouted. “Too bad. No one here speaks it. And I have to learn Italian and French. What garbage languages. No offence.” he said. “Offence taken,” said Liz. “Where are you from,” Julian asked in surprise. “Here,” she snapped, “Not that it matters.” He rolled his eyes. “How boring. Who are you anyway?” “Liz,” she replied, “Steph’s best friend.” “So you’re the one who’ll break my legs if I break his heart. Got it.” “Yeah,” she said, as I said, “What?” He looked at me, “I mean, you’re gay right? That’s why you were checking me out? And why you’re blushing?” I opened my mouth, but words didn’t come out. I just nodded. He shrugged, “You’re hot. I’ll go out with you.” Then he kissed me on the cheek and went back to the drama girls. I stood there for a moment then turned to Liz. “What just happened?” “Apparently, you have a boyfriend.”

When the second verse started, James noticed a curious and, well, maybe not entirely unexpected echo of another voice behind the song. Trav. Of course it was Trav. Who else would it be, wandering into his room unannounced and without so much as a knock on the door before opening it? Trav who, instead of joining James in a gap year, was heading off to TAFE for an apprenticeship. Trav, who had been spending most of his days with James since school ended, just like nothing was any different, and TAFE didn’t start till the first week of March anyway. With a delighted laugh, James pulled his headphone cord out of the jack—so Trav could actually hear the music he was singing to— and lowered his headphones around his neck, all without ever stopping the shimmy his feet and hips were doing along with the music. James joined in with Trav for the next chorus, reaching out his hands to hook into the unused belt loops of Trav’s pants and pulling him closer.
