Dave flipped through the channels, looking for something that would be appropriate for kids. His aunt and uncle were away for the day, and he was left to babysit their daughter Naomi. Dave finally found a channel that had some kids at an amusement park, and decided it would do.
The doorbell rang. Dave answered it. It was Hero. Dave had known the canvas crosser for years.
A look of surprise flashed across Hero’s face.
“What is it?” Dave asked.
“Nothing, just…” Hero started. “Guess it’s my time in the spotlight! Anyway, I’m just stopping by for a short visit.”
“Just don’t get up to any shit, okay?” Dave said. “The painting we had above the fireplace is still ruined from last time you were here. We had to take it down because you left a bag of chips inside, and crumbs all over. It’s not like the rest of us can pick up after you. It’s a fucking painting, Hero.”
“Ha, good to see you too, Dave!” Hero said, smiling. “Whatcha up to?”
“I’m babysitting my cousin over here,” Dave said. “We’re watching something.”
“Cool, let me see,” Hero said. He took off his boots and came to watch. The characters were getting in line for a roller coaster.
“I want to go on one of those rides!” Naomi pleaded.
“We can do that,” Hero said. “Here, come with me. Let’s see if you’re tall enough.”
Hero grabbed her hand and walk to the screen.
“Hero, what are you doing?” Dave complained. “If anything happens to her –”
“Don’t worry, I’ll look after her,” Hero promised.
He stepped through the screen, bringing Dave’s little cousin along to the ‘You must be this tall to ride’ sign, where the main characters were measuring themselves. Naomi was just tall enough.
They got on the roller coaster. Naomi sat next to a boy. This was one of the main characters, probably the only one tall enough to ride. Another girl who was heading for her seat saw that it was taken and went to sit further back.

We finished #ToErrIsDivine last time, so I guess I need something new. Let's go with "Babysitting Naomi" (a #MiwwduSitsomSelkieWIP short story). Here's the start of it.

#FantasyIndiesMarch 13: Too many. I currently have #TheDragonblood, #InReverse and #ThroughTheCracks in progress, and recently decided to edit the short stories #ToErrIsDivine and "Babysitting Naomi" (supposed to be a spin-off of #MiwwduSitsomSelkieWIP, yet to be written) into something presentable.

In #ToErrIsDivine (2016), the story which inspired The Dragonblood, Sabrina's predecessor was Stolathida and Gnaramater's was the goddess Scolys. How those characters relate is a spoiler, but you can go and read the story and find out (I've been posting it in parts for Fantasy Indies). (3/9)

Chapter 7: Stolathida and Zeuthya
I’d always enjoyed flying. That’s why some of my favourite forms where birds and of course, dragon form.
The journey to Mount Cholus is long, but not nearly as long as it would have been by foot. By sundown we reach the mountain. We enter the palace, and Lyphorgus leads us through the hallways until we find Stolathida. Just like he said, a trapping circle was drawn around her.
“Lyphorgus, can you break the spell?” I ask him.
“Yes, I think,” Lyphorgus casts his magic and the spell breaks. We carry Stolathida out, but we can’t wake her.
“She’s under some sort of sleeping spell,” I guess. “Anoeroba, can you wake her?”
But she didn’t have time to answer, because a familiar face appeared: the goddess Scolys.
“Scolys? Where’s Zeuthya? Is she here yet?” Anoeroba asks.
“You’re too late,” Scolys responds. “I’m Zeuthya.”
“That’s not possible,” Anoeroba says. “You can’t have become Scolys. I agreed to be her replacement. I should have become goddess instead…”
“Anoeroba, this is not the time,” I interrupt.
Well actually, now that I think of it…
I turn to Zeuthya.
“There’s just two things that I don’t understand,” I say. “One: can the gods be killed?”
“Yes,” Zeuthya answers, confused.
“And two: what happens when a mortal kills a god?”
“The mortal replaces the god. You don’t already know that?” Zeuthya responds.
“Yes, but I had to hear it from you,” I say. “Lyphorgus, teleport to the nearest town. Tell everyone there what you just heard.”
“Huh?” Lyphorgus uttered.
“Each time you tell someone that secret, Zeuthya will become weaker,” I say. “That’s what Anoeroba said, before. Zeuthya will be powerless.”
“Stop! I’ll cooperate,” Zeuthya says.
“Sure, then Lyphorgus, cast a trapping spell on Zeuthya,” I say.
He cast the spell, preventing Zeuthya from moving or casting magic.
“Now, explain,” Anoeroba says. “How did you manage to kill Scolys without me replacing her?”

#FantasyIndiesFebruary 7: If you'll recall, we are sharing #ToErrIsDivine, my NaNoWriMo 2016 story, which vaguely inspired #TheDragonblood. Continuing from last week, Amothratus and friends rescue Stolathida. But they are already too late in stopping Zeuthya.

Zero effort was put into writing anything resembling a proper story.

But it contains some of my first playing around with time travel, as well as the seeds of what would become #ToErrIsDivine (the predecessor to The Dragonblood), #InReverse AND my selkie story below. (6/13)

I'll probably post #ToErrIsDivine, my 4395 word accidental short story from NaNoWriMo 2016 (accidental, because it was INTENDED to be a 50K novel) that I'm currently posting in snippets for Fantasy Indies. Maybe even with some edits. (2/5)

And that's not counting what's changed since The Dragonblood's predecessors, like #ToErrIsDivine (which I've been sharing for Saturday snippets), which was supposed to be set in the same world, with the same shapeshifter main character (Aimetor/Amothratus). But essentially nothing remains. (4/4)

Honestly, it might just be me being stubborn. I think the story's been heading in a science fantasy direction for a while, now.

#ToErrIsDivine, written a year before I started on #TheDragonblood and which the latter was loosely based on I think precedes the addition of sci-fi elements. (1/14)

I think this doesn't count the original short story I wrote for school. So four?

#ToErrIsDivine: 2 drafts, one for each of NaNoWriMo 2015 and NaNoWriMo 2016. The former was never completed. The latter completely revamped the cast of characters and expanded the plot. (2/4)

Four mages are sent on a mysterious quest by a goddess. The goddess gives them very little to go on, hiding some important secret. Three of them agree, but the fourth declines. Shortly after, the fourth mage disappears, and the three others set off on the goddess' quest in the hopes of finding her. Will they succeed in their quest? More importantly, what secret is the goddess hiding? And what happened to their friend who disappeared?

To Err is Divine is a fantasy WIP, perhaps Young Adult. One of the precursors to The Dragonblood.

Inspiration
- Earlier stories I'd written that I consider precursors to The Dragonblood, including #ToErrIsDivine
- The Thirteenth House by Sharon Shinn inspired the shapeshifter character in those precursors who would become Aimetor
