Tom Goodwin So this "friend" thing is interesting. I think the fine people of technology are the only people who watched dystopian movies and thought they were the playbook, not warnings. A technology companion that listens to you and provides “company". The weird thing about friendships is they require effort, a lot of effort, they require thought, they require vulnerability. That's the point. The way to deal with this isn't to give up, to outsource it, to pretend software can do that. It's to get used to the idea that EVERYTHING WORTH DOING IN LIFE IS HARD. Everything that makes us grow, scares us and takes our energy. I'm absolutely astonished at how many people in tech environments think that life is something to optimize away. That cooking is a waste of time, that walking is worse than an Uber, that remembering someone's birthday is using up valuable brain space, that writing fan mail is something to give to Al. It's absolutely bananas that these people are leading the direction of humanity.
