Tomb of Lord Cornwallis in Ghazipur, India For most Americans, the name Charles Cornwallis immediately calls to mind his humiliating defeat at the hands of American and French armies at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. However, after the defeat at Yorktown, Cornwallis went on to have a long and illustrious career. After returning to Great Britain, Cornwallis still had the confidence of King George III, who sent him as ambassador to the court of King Frederick II (the Great) of Prussia in 1785. The following year, he was knighted and was appointed Governor-General of India, where he became responsible for setting up British administrative services across the subcontinent that laid the groundwork for the British Raj, including the Cornwallis Code, a civil and criminal code enacted in India in 1793. Cornwallis had been made a Marquess (thus earning him the title "Lord") in 1792, and after his code was established, he returned to Britain as a celebrated administrator. After a stint as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1798 to 1801, his political benefactor William Pitt the Younger, prime minister of Great Britain, sent Cornwallis back to India in 1805 as Governor-General to get a better handle on the political situation there after a tumultuous term by Arthur Wellesley (the Duke of Wellington's older brother). Shortly after his return, Cornwallis developed a fever and died in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. His tomb was built outside the city on a bluff overlooking the Ganges River, where was buried and remains to this day. Today, his tomb is protected and administered by the Archaeological Survey of India.

A bolour photograph in portrait format. It shows a close up view, from above, of the carved face of a lady from the 16th century. The sympathetic face looks to one side, an Elizabethan ruff and head dress frame her face. It is a shame that the carving has been spoiled (probably Reformation damage). I admit I was surprised to see in the carving that she has her eyes open!

The Tomb of Ni-Ankh-Khnum and Khnum-Hotep in Badrshein, Egypt The decorated tombs that have survived from ancient Egypt share detailed biographical information about the their occupants. From the elaborate wall-paintings and hieroglyphic inscriptions, we can learn a great deal about the deceased—their names and ages, their professions and accomplishments, the size and composition of their families. In the 1960s, archaeologists were flabbergasted to discover a tomb that was not like the others. Instead of a husband and wife, the tomb had been built for two men named Ni-Ankh-Khnum and Khnum-Hotep, who had worked together as manicurists and hairdressers at the royal court during the Fifth Dynasty. More than 4000 years ago, two men had decided to spend eternity together. Ni-Ankh-Khnum and Khnum-Hotep commissioned an unusual series of wall paintings to decorate their tomb. In addition to scenes from daily life of the time—which are common in the Saqqara necropolis—they included several double portraits in which they were depicted holding hands and embracing. These paintings have survived and can be still seen in the tomb today. Ever since the tomb’s discovery, it has been the subject of debate between archaeologists. Were Ni-Ankh-Khnum and Khnum-Hotep close friends and colleagues who made the unusual decision to build a joint tomb for their two families? Were they brothers—perhaps identical twins—who posed for a double-portrait in the tomb where they were buried alongside their extended family? Or, as visitors to the tomb often wonder, were Ni-Ankh-Khnum and Khnum-Hotep the first gay couple in recorded history? Archaeologists continue to study the tomb and its enigmatic wall paintings. But one thing is clear: whether Ni-Ankh-Khnum and Khnum-Hotep were friends or brothers or lovers, the affection that they felt for one another has endured for more than four millennia. These two men continue to open our eyes to the richness and complexity of ancient Egyptian society.

More Discoveries at Saqqara Excavations have revealed more tombs and mastabas from the Old Kingdom (c. 2686–2181 BCE) and New Kingdom (c. 1570–1069 BCE) periods.

El Mo'alla Necropolis in Egypt Ancient Egypt was far from a monotonous period of history, with numerous periods of political and social strife occurring in the course of over 1,000 years. One of the most notable of these is the First Intermediate Period, a 125-year "Dark Age" of the 22nd and 21st centuries BCE in which few monuments were built and many were pillaged or destroyed. The country was split into Upper and Lower Egypt, with the pharaohs of each holding little power compared to the local rulers, known as nomarchs. One of the most powerful and prosperous nomarchs of the time was Ankhtifi, based in Nekhen. His tomb at the El Mo'alla Necropolis south of Luxor provides a rare glimpse of the period's life, art style, and practices. Ankhtifi's tomb autobiography boasts of how he brought economic stability and security to his region at a time when much of Egypt was in a prolonged famine. Although ruling largely independently of the pharaohs, he supported those of Lower Egypt in their attempts to conquer Upper Egypt. A unique glimpse into an understudied period of Ancient Egypt, Ankhtifi's tomb has been preserved and opened to the public alongside those of his family and other nomarchs at El Mo'alla.

Merlin's Tomb in Paimpont, France The enchanted forest of Brocéliande is recurrently featured in numerous medieval texts of Arthurian legends, although its location is uncertain. Today, Paimpont Forest in Brittany, France, is considered the most probable contender for it, commonly referred to in French as _Forêt de Brocéliande_ (Brocéliande Forest). The tradition of this association goes all the way back to the 13th century, around which time the locals called the forest Brocélien or Brec'Helean. Since the 19th century, it has been a tourist site among followers of Neo-Druidism and fans of Arthurian legend. In the myths, the forest of Brocéliande was a mysterious place full of fairies and magic. Deep within these woods is the Vale of No Return, domain of the notorious sorceress Morgan le Fay where she entrapped a myriad knights until they were rescued by Sir Lancelot. Here it is also said that Viviane, the Lady of the Lake, tricked Merlin into a magical, deathlike sleep that lasts to this day. There are many different versions of the legend of Merlin's end, but one of the most prominent ones is that Viviane trapped Merlin in a grave to hold him for all eternity. Research conducted in the late 1800s identified the northeastern part of the Brocéliande Forest as the site of Merlin's demise. When researchers came upon a neolithic gallery grave in this area of the forest, they claimed it as the place where Merlin is trapped. The site consists of three large stone slabs placed together, with a circle of stones surrounding it, and has been there for thousands of years. Whether or not the mythical wizard is really trapped underneath the stones, the history and folklore of the place give Merlin's Tomb a magical feel. Today, visitors often leave notes to Merlin in between the stones, hoping that he will grant the wishes written upon them.

The Slavín Tomb at Vyšehrad Cemetery in Prague, Czechia Perched atop Vyšehrad hill, overlooking the winding Vltava, Slavín feels like a place where the spirits of Czech history gather. This neo-Renaissance mausoleum serves as a final resting place for the nation’s greatest minds—Antonín Dvořák’s music lingers in the air, Bedřich Smetana’s legacy hums through the stones, and Alfons Mucha’s artistry watches silently from carved memorials. Winding paths lead through ivy-draped crypts and quiet gardens, where statues seem to whisper stories of creativity, courage, and memory. From the hill, the city stretches below like a tapestry of lights and rooftops, and at sunset, the golden glow casts a magical hush over the graves, as if the past itself pauses to breathe. Standing before Slavín is like stepping into a dreamscape of national pride, a poetic world where history, art, and legend mingle under Prague’s sky.

Cloister of the Dead in Firenze, Italy The Cloister of the Dead at Santa Maria Novella in Florence is the oldest of the convent’s cloisters, dating back to the late thirteenth century when it was built for the Dominican friars. Its name comes from its long use as the community’s burial ground. For centuries, the walls were lined with tombstones, coats of arms, and inscriptions, turning the space into a lapidary cemetery that preserves the memory of Dominican friars as well as prominent Florentine families. Architecturally, the cloister reflects simple Gothic lines, arched walkways, vaulted corridors, serving as both a place of meditation and a resting place for the dead. It’s the kind of place where you can lose track of time wandering the shadowed corridors, reading epitaphs and tracing the names and dates of its long-gone inhabitants. Today, it forms part of the Santa Maria Novella museum complex, a quiet witness to the religious and civic life of medieval Florence.
