Happy #TortoiseTuesday! Tilly is working to develop strong muscles like her big bro, Tytus. To help her work those leg and neck muscles, Iโm holding this plantain leaf above her head. In the wild, sheโd pull leaves off of plants just like this.
Tyler Lovell got a new lens so YOU get to be up close and personal with one of Lyonia Preserveโs resident gopher tortoises. What a way to celebrate #tortoisetuesday!

Happy #TortoiseTuesday! Tytus is a Russian Tortoise, which are weed-eating* tortoises. Pictured: dandelion leaves & flowers, clover, echinacea, red leaf lettuce, & pansies. Variety is key to a healthy diet (as well as vitamins & calcium supplements.)
*He does not eat fruit or veggies.

Happy #TortoiseTuesday! Not all turtles are tortoises, but all tortoises are turtles. One distinguishing feature of a tortoise is they are herbivores while their turtle brethren are omnivores.

Happy #TortoiseTuesday! Every Tuesday Iโm going to post a pic of Tytus with an interesting tidbit about tortoises. Here goesโฆtortoises can drink water through their tails.
An Aldabra giant tortoise seeking as much shade as possible behind the trunk of a tree that is almost entirely engulfed by a strangler fig. Some aerial roots from the strangler fig on the branches above the tortoise hang down and frame the tortoise like a curtain.
Lunchtime on Aldabra Atoll - where sharing the shade with gorgeous giants makes any day feel like #TortoiseTuesday ๐๐ข๐ฟ #FieldworkArchive

A classic! This is Bella, an eastern hermanns tortoise (Testudo hermanni boettgeri).
Iโve had her for 17 years.
Overwintering as she had some health issues this year, all good now tho.

#TortoiseTuesday? Desert Tortoise, Gopherus agassizii. State reptile of California. Despite these peaceful herbivores living in areas humans mostly donโt want to be in, we have still managed to impact them negatively. Such a gift to see one out roaming. #herps #tortoise #deserttortoise #fieldwork
Two giant tortoises in a pond filled with green algal scum. Long threads of green hang from their mouths down to the water like green spaghetti.

Pen & ink drawing of a leopard tortoise walking by a spiky plant. Done on yellowish calligraphy paper.
For #TortoiseTuesday this is my pen & ink of a Leopard Tortoise on calligraphy paper. These tortoises range across various habitats in Africa. The shell was especially interesting to do. I have an ongoing series of drawings like these of various tortoises.

A happy Yuletide to everyone on this fine #TortoiseTuesday! - which at least Kevin @thetortoiseproject.bsky.social gets to celebrate on the holiest of holies ๐๐ข๐

"Edie is the cutest tortoise around!"
A tortoise in a pond, feeding on large mouthfuls of slimy green algae. The light is low, it is close to sunset.
Eat your greens this #TortoiseTuesday - just like this Aldabra giant tortoise, bobbing around in a pond on Eastern Grande Terre, munching on thick blobs of green algae. ๐ข๐ฟ #FieldworkArchive

Ah, heck - another sleeper for #TortoiseTuesday: Carapace of a giant old male Aldabran squeezed in tightly under an overhang in the Leguat Reserve, Rodrigues.
As Hermann Melville put it in The Encantadas: "What other bodily being possesses such a citadel wherein to resist the assaults of Time?โ ๐๐ข๐ค๐ฟ
The front end of a sleeping giant tortoise with part of the shell and most of its head except for eyes and snout/nostrils submerged under water in a small rock pool
Noon-snoozing giant chilling out in a murky pool on Aldabra Atoll this #TortoiseTuesday - nostrils strategically held just above the water line. #FieldworkArchive ๐ฟ๐ข
Two giant tortoises lying on a bit of grass in a forest. They both have their front legs stretched out and look very relaxed.
Just two giant pals hanging out in the evening on this #TortoiseTuesday - neatly highlighting the broad range of shell shapes on Aldabra Atoll: One has a wide open front, the other one a much lower front #FieldworkArchive ๐ข๐ฟ
#tortoisetuesday should be a thing
A giant tortoise sitting on a sandy surface - with wet grains of sand all around its nose and mouth
"I didn't snort anything - why do you ask?" - an innocent Aldabra giant tortoise outside our field camp, deep-diving into the sand where we emptied the water from a few cans of tuna #TortoiseTuesday #FieldworkArchive ๐ข๐ฟ
the front part of a giant tortoise, head, long neck, front legs and part of the shell, walking on white sand. The tortoise has a partly open mouth, biting down towards a small green seedling.
For #TortoiseTuesday, here's a large male Aldabra giant tortoise exploring the white sands of LaGigi on Picard Island at low tide, about to end the young life of a tasty mangrove seedling. Note how it extends its sticky tongue to help pull the plant into its mouth #FieldworkArchive ๐ข๐ฟ
