Maggots and Men, trailer
Maggots and Men, trailer YouTube video by Cary Cronenwett

Just opened Criterion and stumbled upon something called Maggots and Men which boast of featuring the largest cast of trans actors in film history, as a homage to Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin and...babes.

Boys Don't Cry To what extent does Boys Don’t Cry reinforce or resist the ‘tragic queer’ trope often found in LGBTQ+ cinema?

I wrote an essay about Boys Don't Cry, where I explore to what extent Boys Don’t Cry reinforces or resists the ‘tragic queer’ trope often found in LGBTQ+ cinema.

Boldly challenging the norms of 1999, BOYS DON'T CRY sheds light on the courage it takes to live authentically. It remains a vital milestone in queer cinema.

Actress Danni Rittler decided to keep the make up on after our last make up tests and sent us this later that night.

We've been impressed by her passion and dedication to the film and the unique energy she brings to the character.

By Hook or By Crook (2001) [TRAILER]
By Hook or By Crook (2001) [TRAILER] Shy, a small-town butch with a nagging messiah complex, heads to the big city to immerse herself in a life of crime. On her journey, she meets her match in Valentine, a wise-acre adoptee who is searching for her birth-mother. The two lonely grifters join forces and embark on a journey through the skid-row streets of San Francisco and learn the true meaning of poise under pressure and the importance of friendship. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290498/

Trans masc folks, just in case you hadn't heard of it you should watch By Hook Or By Crook. Butch dykes too.

What happens when a transmasc person who has experienced a shit-ton of abuse falls in love with a transfem person who is newly coming out and is also coming from a ton of abuse? Queer people, so many of our stories are just that we’re hurting each other, and just figuring out how to love. That can often look really kind of messy and toxic, and I’d never really seen it in a movie before — at least in this context, in a T4T relationship. So I was excited to do it.

A lot of media featuring trans characters certainly brushes over those messy (but very common) dynamics and bows to respectability instead. Was your movie in any way a reaction to that bent toward wholesomeness?

Completely. I wanted to make the rudest Batman movie ever made. There are jokes in it where I wanted people to watch it and go, “Can you actually say that? I’m worried a cis person might see this!”

The movie really was this line in the sand almost, like: “This is what I’m capable of. This is the kind of shit that I’m into.” It might feel radical, but I’m also obsessed with George Lucas. Steven Spielberg is my favorite director. I really do love traditional storytelling and genre filmmaking, and I wanted to show that you can actually talk about queer reality and actual queer relationships and dynamics and abuse and trauma in that context without it feeling like a fucking Pride Month commercial or something

Also, it was part of the experiment of it all. The movie is so silly. We break the fourth wall maybe too many times. Joker’s constantly calling out that she’s in a movie, while also going to these really dramatic scenes with her and her mom. I was always told you couldn’t make a movie like this, with this many styles and shifting moods — that was the one rule you couldn’t break. I really wanted to prove to myself that, “No, you can find that singular vision inside that amount of chaos and bombardment of jokes and imagery and crazy shit.
