The photo is titled "René M. in the Realm of Lights" because it appears to depict a daytime sky over a nighttime scene, reminiscent of some of René Magritte's artwork. A completely black Cannondale Super-V frame, devoid of logos, was paired with a silver Lyric suspension fork offering up to 16 cm of travel, a Rohloff hub, a handlebar-adjustable seatpost (not yet standard in 2007!), and a 32-tooth steel spring fork. The bike was positioned on a summer night at the Avantis grounds between Kerkrade, Netherlands, and Aachen, Germany, next to an artificial waterfall and a body of water. Some streetlights are brighter than the moonlight and illuminate not only the water and the bike but also some trees. The dune-like cloud formation that formed before the full moon and covers large portions of the sky is real. The photo has only been cropped and is otherwise unedited.

A huge excavator is doing its work of lignite mining. It moves in a huuge hole and, together with many "colleagues," transforms it into an abstract work of art dominated by beige and brown tones. According to Wikipedia (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rheinisches_Braunkohlerevier), "the Rhenish Lignite Mining Region is a mining region in the Cologne Bay, on the northwestern edge of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Open-pit lignite mining has significantly transformed the landscape here and led to the development of several important industrial sites. The region encompasses the Zülpich and Jülich Börde, the Erft Lowlands, and the Ville region. The Rhenish Lignite Mining Region is one of the largest lignite mining regions in Europe. Clay, quartz sand, and loess are mined here to a lesser extent. The industrial use of the region, including the entire value chain from coal mining to electrical power generation, is currently managed exclusively by the RWE Group (through its subsidiary RWE Power). According to current plans, mining in the Rhenish Lignite Mining Region is secured until 2030. Forecasts regarding future developments are difficult, as a central pillar of Germany's energy transition is a coal phase-out."
