Simone Martini, 'Christ Discovered in the Temple' 1342. This fabulous gold-ground painting shows the Virgin Mary in her typical red dress and blue cloak seated in the lower left with a prayer book in her lap. Her husband Joseph stands just to the right of the central vertical axis, gesturing with an open right palm towards his wife, who in turn raises an upturned right hand towards the young Jesus. Jesus, wearing a short red one-shoulder cloak over an ankle-length blue tunic, crosses his arms defiantly in front of his chest/abdomen, seemingly uninterested in the hand of his earthly father on his left shoulder, embracing him from behind. According to the current National Gallery London exhibition "Siena and the Rise of Painting," this image "is a universal story of unexplained absence, parental worry and youthful rebellion."
