Der prächtige Trifidnebel ist eine kosmische Kontraststudie. Man kennt ihn auch als M20. Er ist ungefähr 5000 Lichtjahre entfernt und liegt im nebelreichen Sternbild Schütze. Der Trifid ist eine Sternbildungsregion in der Ebene unserer Galaxis. Er enthält drei verschiedene Arten astronomischer Nebel. Es sind rote Emissionsnebel, blaue Reflexionsnebel und dunkle Nebel. Das Licht der Atome von Wasserstoff prägt die roten Emissionsnebel. Blaue Reflexionsnebel entstehen, wenn Staub das Licht von Sternen reflektiert. In dunklen Nebeln sind dichte Staubwolken als Silhouetten zu sehen. Die undurchsichtigen Staubbahnen teilen die rote Emissionsregion grob in drei Teile. Daher hat der Trifidnebel seinen gängigen Namen. Rechts oben im roten Emissionsnebel sind Säulen und Strahlen erkennbar. Sie wurden von neu entstandenen Sternen geformt. Auf berühmten Nahaufnahmen des Weltraumteleskops Hubble sind sie im Detail zu sehen. Der Trifidnebel ist ungefähr 40 Lichtjahre groß. Er ist zu blass für das bloße Auge. Auf diesem detailreichen Teleskopbild bedeckt er am Himmel der Erde einen Bereich, der fast so groß ist wie der Vollmond.
