Happy World Turtle Day®!

Today we celebrate the Desert Tortoises and consider their precarious situation. Their survival into the future is literally in human hands and dependent on the choices we all make.

Desert Tortoises spend much of their time underground, either through the winter, at night, or during the hottest part of the day. This is a great time of year to see them if you are out hiking in the places they live. Help the Desert Tortoise Council assure the perpetual survival of Desert Tortoises in their wild landscapes!

Hi There!

I’m on my way, I’m making it…
This big-time species is the largest of the 6 North American tortoise species and is considered Critically Endangered by the IUCN. The Desert Tortoise Council visited again recently and assisted the USFWS and Sevilleta NWR biologists with the Bolson Tortoise project at Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. We're going to enjoy watching them grow!

Tiny Tortoise Time!

Nothing quite as cute as a tiny hatchling tortoise. They are also a sign that the desert location they are living in could be healthier than many others. Maybe raven populations are not profiting from human activity as much there, and perhaps invasive plant species aren’t choking out quality food plants the tortoises love. If you visit, or live in the desert, do your part to keep it a great place for hatchling tortoises to live and grow up into old, successful adults. Don’t inadvertently provide food for ravens, and don’t use plants in your yard that could escape and grow out of control in the landscape. The wild survival of Desert Tortoises into the future is literally, in our hands. #TurtleMonth
