The problem is the sector as a whole cannot agree on where to put the caps. The marketization war of all against all means no guidance will come from #UCEA. And sadly government is too busy contemplating its thumb up its ass to listen to folks in the sector with proposals.
If #UCEA really wanted to cut "unproductive" faculty, why not start with all those who are openly & cheerfully outsourcing their job tasks to LLM chabots? But no, 🤔 that ain't what's happening.
Which further pulls down grant funding and around we go. Each institution making the same stupid mistakes. I have always thought of #UCEA as a cartel so it's wild to see them follow each other around the financial toilet bowl utterly bewildered by the consequences.

The joy you feel when you *finally* meet your writing collaborators in person at #UCEA after years of meeting regularly virtually! 😄
Grateful to @prof-ishimaru.bsky.social and Dr. Decoteau Irby for inviting me to be a part of this work. Very much looking forward to catching up with other chapter authors at #ucea
And #UCEA / #UUK want it to stay because it allows them to forever wave away *local* negotiations over placement of jobs on the spine or workload levels if we are always in a *national* dispute.
This is nearly 2.6X more than the 1.4% #ucea have offered university staff, yet silence from the #ukpress and @ucu.org.uk. Nurses definitely deserve better, but so do researchers www.theguardian.com/society/2025...
University staff are being offered a 1.4% 'pay rise (cut)' by the #UCEA, this on top of years of real terms pay cuts and for most of us fixed term contracts and lack of meaningful progression. I feel undervalued and mocked. Despite this terrible offer, there is no press coverage or #UCU support
Yeah I know AERA has a bigger network to connect with, but you know what? #UCEA feels like home! Now that the paper’s been accepted @ucea-leadership.bsky.social, it’s not too far off to start packing the bags for Puerto Rico ❤️ See you there folks ✌🏽
Apart from being a stellar scholar, @daveosworth.bsky.social is a great methodologist & I’ve appreciated the chance to learn alongside him on this project. We analyzed 75 different district’s discipline policies in SC using CRT. #EduSky #EdPolicy #UCEA
New Pub Alert! This article examines district discipline policies in South Carolina from a CRT perspective. Shout out to @mnathantanner.bsky.social for being such an amazing collaborator! #edusky #academicsky #UCEA

Why did #UCEA do this? I have a theory... perhaps they thought it might make them look weak. Make a threat and then not follow through? I mean, possibly. But again, there's nothing that makes you look weaker than doing something just so you don't look weak.
#UCEA had an opportunity to take the high ground, which could have further isolated the strike-junkies. Instead, they've fed into their narrative and enabled and empowered them.
#UCEA 's position and letter makes them look petty, spiteful, and stupid. They know that most members want that joint engagement because we voted for it. Taking it away is saying that we don't actually care about any of the things that you care about that we said we cared about too.
#UCEA must have at least some insight into #UCU internal politics, right? It must know that the faction that wants strike action almost certainly doesn't really want anything like joint working on issues of common concern. So why give them what they want?
#UCEA could and should have kept the offer of joint working open. It could and should simply have noted its deep dismay at the ballot call, noted the narrow margin, said that they thought there was no appetite for strike action and thought any ballot would show that.
So, #UCEA in their finite wisdom have pulled their offer of joint work with #UCU on the pay spine, contract types, workload, equality, various other issues. This whole debacle is why we can't have nice things like workable industrial relations in our sector...

Quote from UCEA letter condemning the decision by UCU HEC for a strike ballot
As predicted, #UCEA have followed through on their threat. Remember in the consultation, 85% voted FOR this consultation to continue, in contrast to just 53% who voted for industrial action.
And which did #UCULeft decide to ignore?
#UCU #HEC #CampusTradeUnions
Putting my @ucu.org.uk card on the table.
Journalists have spent too much time talking to think tanks (🤮 #HEPI) and the employers association (🤢 #UCEA / #UUK ) and little time.
We as front line staff members both experience the cuts and have dedicated time to understanding this problem.
Who @qmucu.bsky.social is telling ministers that these are the structural problems and how they propagate through the system? #UCEA? Friggin #HEPI? 🤣
And the revolutionaries amongst our union membership have no interest in tackling structural finance issues. So... 🤷🏻
Well all good things must end. Thank you @ucea.bsky.social and @uceagsc.bsky.social for another great #UCEA Conference!
I had two school principals validate my initial conclusions that much of the security tech in schools is over-hyped and counter-productive and this was why I love coming to #UCEA. This kind of interaction happens every year at UCEA and almost never at other research conferences
I’m reminded how when you have expertise in area or have worked on a topic for a while, communicating details or scaffolding gets overtaken by telling people to “just fold it in”
Food for thought

Best #UCEA presentation quote: COVID was bad (lots of citations). Here’s our framework…
Pedro Noguera led the panel and pulled together some local deeper learning leaders who spoke to how their schools were having success across a variety of domains. But, certainly put the challenge to #UCEA to get into that work and help them.
Pulled up to to #UCEA to kick it with the homies. No one more popular than @markiejay06.bsky.social
I wish I was the kind of girly who wanted to go out in West Hollywood tonight but sadly I prefer a glass of wine and reruns of the Office #ucea
