the missing l manly without an l is many. unearthly without an l just falls. i keep looking for that letter— the lift, the light, the love, the loss— whatever it was that made earth reach upward, and men believe they could. many earthy beings long for leisure, but i long for the l, for the thing that turns sure into lure, lone into lover, less into listen. if i ever find it, i’ll slip it back where it belongs, and maybe then we’ll live after all.
