The lead ship of the #EssexClass of aircraft carriers was commissioned on #ThisDayInHistory in 1942. #USSEssex was the first of 24 ships (32 were ordered!) of the type. 14 were finished in time to serve in #WWII, none were lost to enemy action, and four are preserved as museums.
The plane struck the port edge of the flight deck, landing among planes fueled for takeoff, causing extensive damage, killing 15, and wounding 44.’
