The King wanted to hold on to America for its natural resources, but he eventually consented to the will of British lawmakers. Across the Atlantic, colonists began preparing for the end of the war. It would take another eight months, but both sides reached a peace agreement in November. The U.S. and UK signed the Treaty of Paris that officially ended the American Revolutionary War in September of 1783.

On this day in 1782, England’s House of Commons voted to stop fighting American colonists. King George III was politically and emotionally crushed by this vote. He even wrote a letter abdicating his throne in protest, though he only shared the letter with a close advisor.
