Volcanic Ash Advisory (#VAAC) for #Ulawun #volcano (New Britain, Papua New Guinea)
Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (#VAAC) #Darwin warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 12000 ft (3700 m) altitude or flight level 120 .

#SouthKorea's geostationary #GK2B #GEMS instrument is tracking some of the SO₂ emitted by the Nov 20-21 #Ulawun #eruption as it disperses over the Western Pacific. #Volcanic degassing from #Dukono (#Indonesia) and #Philippine #volcanoes also visible. @andrewcraigtupp @airesEO
#Sentinel5P #TROPOMI detects ~0.1-0.15 Tg SO₂ in the #Ulawun #eruption cloud on Nov 21 at 3:05 UTC. There appears to be relatively little stratospheric SO₂ injection. @CopernicusEU @BIRA_IASB
#Ulawun #eruption intensified at ~21:20 UTC on Nov 20, producing an umbrella cloud that cast a shadow on the lower-level #volcanic plume. @andrewcraigtupp
Dawn in #PapuaNewGuinea (Nov 21, local time) reveals a dense #volcanic ash plume from #Ulawun drifting over East New Britain. #Eruption is continuing. #Himawari9 data from @CIRA_CSU.
First #Ulawun SO₂ retrieval from @NASA #Aqua/#AIRS detects ~0.03 Tg SO₂ (~30 kt) at 16:10 UTC on Nov 20. Emissions were ongoing at the satellite overpass time, so the total SO₂ emission for the #eruption will be higher. @airesEO @NASAEarth @NASAJPL
Ongoing #eruption of #Ulawun #volcano (#PapuaNewGuinea) clearly detected amid tropical convection by the @JMA_kishou #Himawari8 SO₂ RGB product (yellow/orange = upper-level SO₂). Emissions continuing as of 15:40 UTC/Nov 20. Largest Ulawun eruption since 2019.

Further morphological change at #Ulawun #volcano (#PapuaNewGuinea) after the Aug 3 #eruption evident in @planetlabs imagery. Possible new vent SW of main crater that modified during the Jun 26 eruption. #Ulawun has a history of opening new flank vents during its larger eruptions.
Another large #eruption of #Ulawun (#PapuaNewGuinea) on Aug 3. #Sentinel5P #Tropomi measuring ~0.2 Tg of SO2 in the volcanic cloud on Aug 4 - perhaps a bit larger than the June 26 eruption. Not clear yet how much SO2 is stratospheric. @CopernicusEMS @andrewcraigtupp @airesEO
The tropical #eruption of #Ulawun #volcano (#PapuaNewGuinea) on June 26 emitted an order of magnitude less SO2 than the #Raikoke eruption, but the gas could spread into both hemispheres.
And as the SO2 emissions from #Ulawun disperse over #PapuaNewGuinea on June 28, #Manam (western PNG) also erupts. The SO2 plume from Manam is evident in this #Sentinel5P #Tropomi data above the 'background' from Ulawun.
Significant changes to the upper flanks of #Ulawun also apparent in @planetlabs imagery. Looks like erosion of gullies that channeled PDCs to the north and SE.
Aftermath of #eruption of #Ulawun #volcano (#PapuaNewGuinea) captured in @planetlabs imagery on June 26. Pyroclastic flows up to ~7 km from the vent on the SE flank and ashfall to the west. @BrendanVolc @EmmaLiu31 @SmithsonianGVP @andrewcraigtupp @eruptionsblog @janinekrippner
Similar amount of SO2 detected in the #Ulawun eruption cloud by #Sentinel5P #Tropomi on June 27 with full plume coverage; ~0.14 Tg SO2. Largest eruption of the #volcano since October 1980.
Latest @NASA AIRS data showing ~0.1 Tg SO2 in the #Ulawun (#PapuaNewGuinea) #eruption cloud. This is a minimum amount as the western part (~25%?) of the plume is not covered. Appears similar in magnitude to the October 1980 eruption. @airesEO @andrewcraigtupp
Loop of #lightning data from #Ulawun #volcano in 10 minute intervals from 0120-0130 UTC through 0800-0810 UTC. Red dots are Cloud-to-Ground lightning, black dots are In-Cloud lightning from @VaisalaGroup GLD360.
#Ulawun #Volcano erupted today and spit out big amounts of #lightning within 50km. @VaisalaGroup GLD360 detected 1522 strokes, 1329 of which were In-Cloud (black dots), 193 Cloud-to-Ground (red dots). @C_MarieSmith @simoncarn @volcaniclastic @CorCima
Significant #eruption column developing over #Ulawun #volcano (#PapuaNewGuinea) at 4:50 UTC, June 26. A smaller eruption occurred a few hours beforehand. Elevated SO2 emissions were detected on June 25. https://col.st/iGkaR
