Still mesmerized by this cute little blob of #volcanic SO2 from the June 2019 #Raikoke #eruption (#Russia), which flew past southern #Japan around this time last year (and eventually circled the globe). Data from #Sentinel5P #Tropomi. @ESA_EO @esa @NASAEarth
It feels like an eternity, but 1 year ago #Raikoke #volcano (Kuril Is, #Russia) unexpectedly produced one of the largest #eruptions of the last decade. @NASA @JPSSProgram OMPS 🛰️ data show the stratospheric #volcanic SO2 cloud slowly dispersing over the N. Hemisphere. @NASAEarth
Our @theAGU GRL paper on #DSCOVR #EPIC #volcanic SO2 observations was a #TopDownloadedArticle (top 10%) in 2018-19. Stay tuned for the #Raikoke #eruption data. @NASAEarth @NASAGoddard @michigantech @mturesearch @mtugeomining @airesEO #openaccess

Vote #Raikoke in @NASAEarth's Tournament Earth! The all-time best @NASA image has to be a #volcano, right? #EarthDay #EarthDay50 #EarthDayAtHome

#AGU19 abstract submitted on #DSCOVR #EPIC observations of the June 2019 #Raikoke #eruption. Lucky to collect a few days of SO2 data before the DSCOVR spacecraft went into 'safehold' on June 27 due to a gyro problem. Fingers crossed for a future fix. @dscovr_epic @fromamillion
Interesting to compare the #Raikoke data with the June 2009 #eruption of #SarychevPeak (@NASA OMI SO2 data), which was very similar in size, timing & location to Raikoke. Both the Sarychev and Raikoke SO2 plumes persisted for more than a month after eruption.
The tropical #eruption of #Ulawun #volcano (#PapuaNewGuinea) on June 26 emitted an order of magnitude less SO2 than the #Raikoke eruption, but the gas could spread into both hemispheres.
The #Raikoke eruption is also a good example of how, in the #volcano world, what happens at high latitudes, stays at high latitudes. The SO2 has remained north of the Tropics.
There are few better demonstrations of Earth's fluid atmosphere than the dispersal of SO2 after explosive #volcanic #eruptions.
#Sentinel5P #Tropomi data (-> July 16) show SO2 from the June 22 #Raikoke #eruption swirling around the Northern Hemisphere. @CopernicusEU
#Sentinel5P #Tropomi data show drifting SO2 from the June 21 #Raikoke #eruption reaching the UK and northern Europe on July 9.
Strands of SO2 from the June 21 #Raikoke eruption streaming across the NW USA from CA to MT and up to Hudson Bay this afternoon. Data from #Sentinel5P #Tropomi.
The infrasound was recorded ~650 km from #Raikoke at a CTBTO station in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy on the #Kamchatka peninsula. @ctbto_alerts

Hear #Raikoke's roar - Himawari satellite imagery of the June 21 #Raikoke #eruption (from @CIMSS_Satellite) with time-synched remote infrasound (from Robin Matoza at @ucsantabarbara) sped-up to be audible to humans. @C_MarieSmith @volcano_diana @CIDER_DeepEarth
A continuous, contorted stream of SO2 from the Arctic Ocean to the west coast of the US and beyond. The #Raikoke #volcanic cloud is a piece of atmospheric art. Data from #Sentinel5P #Tropomi on June 27.
Here's the ~hourly #DSCOVR #EPIC SO2 data for the #Raikoke #eruption on June 21-22. Useful information on the timing of SO2 emissions. Not bad for a sensor that is ~1,000,000 miles away.
Sunrise to sunset observations of volcanic ash emissions during the #Raikoke #eruption (#Kuril Islands) on June 22 from #DSCOVR #EPIC. @dscovr_epic @fromamillion
SO2 in the dispersing #Raikoke eruption cloud continues to reveal the complex fluid dynamics in Earth's atmosphere. Data from #Sentinel5P #Tropomi on June 25.
Two spectacular Kuril Islands #volcanic eruptions seen from the @Space_Station, ~10 years apart. Sarychev Peak in June 2009 and #Raikoke in June 2019.

SO2 spreading in multiple directions from the #Raikoke volcanic cloud on June 24. The bulk of the plume is now drifting over the Bering Sea. Data from #Sentinel5P #Tropomi.
Latest #Sentinel5P #Tropomi SO2 data (June 23) shows much higher SO2 mass of ~1.35 Tg in the #Raikoke volcanic cloud. Log scale used here to show large range in SO2 column. Northern arm of plume is being entrained into a cyclone over the Aleutian Is. @CopernicusEU
Update on the #Raikoke #eruption SO2 emissions. @NASA AIRS nighttime overpass (15:05 UTC, June 22) detecting ~0.4 Tg total SO2 mass in the cloud. Leading edge of plume is over the Aleutian Islands. @airesEO
#Raikoke Volcano: 4 distinct periods of #lightning activity in the previous 24 hours. @VaisalaGroup #GLD360 detected 753 lightning events, of which 642 were classified as IC, 111 as CG. Peak currents ranged from -64 kA to 105 kA.

Impressive, SO2-rich plume from #eruption of #Raikoke #volcano (Kuril Islands) spreading across the North Pacific on June 22. #Sentinel5P #Tropomi data indicate ~0.3 Tg SO2 but eruption is ongoing. SO2 columns up to ~1000 DU in the plume. @CopernicusEU @airesEO @SmithsonianGVP
There hasn't been #lightning associated with #Raikoke Volcano for the last 30 minutes. Between 1748 UTC 21 June and 0234 UTC 22 June, there were 623 events detected by @VaisalaGroup #GLD360. 539 were classified as In-Cloud, 84 were classified as Cloud-Ground.
