These By-the-wind sailors or #velellavelella have been washing up in #PacificaCA at #SharpParkBeach.

Hundreds of Velella Velella are spread across the beach near the tide line, with shades of blue and purple in the bodies and a translucent sails that protrude up at a 90 degree angle. There are so many that they are stacked two or three layers deep in some places.

This image is zoomed out so we can see down the beach and they continue into infinity. There are so many that they are stacked maybe ten layers deep in some places.
This image is captured with the camera pointed a little bit west / left of the previous image. The ocean can be seen near the top-left corner. A short wall of sand rises about 20 inches at a 90 degree angle from the beach where water drains into the sea. Two people are seen standing on the beach near the tide line in the distance and a few basalt rocks are barely visible through the thick fog further away.
In this image the camera faces south along the shore of the pacific and there are five vehicles seen through the thick fog on the beach near the NW 15th street beach access. There is a sign near the cars that marks the north boundary of the small are of the beach where vehicles are allowed to drive. A long row of basalt rocks of various sizes are seen from just above the tide line out into the sea. Three people are seen standing atop one of the rocks.
I’ve read conflicting warnings about danger to dogs that may eat the #VelellaVelella that are being stranded on the beaches of the #OregonCoast. Here’s a good quote from a marine biologist:

The Velella is a flat, oval-shaped creature about three inches long, with shades of blue and purple in the body and a translucent sail that protrudes up at a 90 degree angle. The body is relatively firm and the sail is flexible but returns to a vertical position when the wind substitutes. The Velella's sail is S-shaped at its base and is attached to the body diagonally. It’s sitting still on the sandy beach.

I was able to film this Velella Velella (aka By-the-Wind-Sailor) as it was washed ashore by the waves and 30 mph winds. #OregonCoast #VelellaVelella

Meet the ocean’s tiny drifters: the by-the-wind sailors.💨
#VelellaVelella are small hydrozoans that travel the seas powered entirely by the wind. Their diagonal little sail catches the breeze + carries them across the surface until shifting winds guide them ashore!

A color photo of a drift of washed up velella velella, a small floating sea organism like a jellyfish, on the beach. There are a lot of them and they are very blue but many are covered with sand.
A color photo of one velella velella, a small floating sea organism like a jellyfish, on the beach. It has a tiny sail that is sea foam pale and translucent on a darker blue body.
A blurry color photo of the underside of a velella velella, a small floating sea organism like a jellyfish, on the beach. It has dark blue tendrils like a sea anemone. This terrible photo was included only for science lol
Velella velella back on the north Oregon coast! Got to the beach this morning and there were slippery smelly drifts of them covering the sand. They're so cool - so blue and strange. I don't even mind the smell. #velellavelella #by-the-wind-sailor #hydrozoa […]

#VelellaVelella or just #Velella on #SanGregorioBeach, CA. Velella is a floating #hydrozoan that can be found on all oceans. They often wash up on the shore in large numbers and dry up into whispy remains. The clear sail enables them to move with the wind.

Third: quite a few very very famous people who came out pro Israel on 8 October have since deleted all mention of either side. For them, it was never about empathy. In fairness, that's a very decent reason to block someone. But it's nothing to do with Israel or Gaza. #VelellaVelella

Velella velella, or by-the-wind sailors — these jellies are usually blown off course during spring storms, and they wash up on the beach. Otherwise they live their lives floating in the open ocean. 💙🌊 #OregonCoast #Walkswithwinston #velellavelella
