This image is captured with the camera pointed a little bit west / left of the previous image. The ocean can be seen near the top-left corner. A short wall of sand rises about 20 inches at a 90 degree angle from the beach where water drains into the sea. Two people are seen standing on the beach near the tide line in the distance and a few basalt rocks are barely visible through the thick fog further away.

The Velella is a flat, oval-shaped creature about three inches long, with shades of blue and purple in the body and a translucent sail that protrudes up at a 90 degree angle. The body is relatively firm and the sail is flexible but returns to a vertical position when the wind substitutes. The Velella's sail is S-shaped at its base and is attached to the body diagonally. It’s sitting still on the sandy beach.

#VelellaVelella or just #Velella on #SanGregorioBeach, CA. Velella is a floating #hydrozoan that can be found on all oceans. They often wash up on the shore in large numbers and dry up into whispy remains. The clear sail enables them to move with the wind.
