Ever wonder why people with #ME/CFS or long #COVID feel exhausted for days after mild activity? This review discusses mitochondrial dysfunction as a potential shared mechanism and therapeutic target.

directly with how mitochondria produce energy. In muscle samples from 14 patients compared with 10 healthy volunteers, most ME/CFS samples showed substantially higher WASF3 levels.

So it probably identified a much larger group than ME/CFS.”
Nevertheless it would be great if the findings from the @decodemestudy.bsky.social found the same gene among the polygenic hits which can be involved in #ME/CFS. #WASF3
Our analysis identified eleven genes which may play important roles in certain aspects of #ME/CFS or related symptoms. In particular, the gene #WASF3 (aka WAVE3) possibly regulates brain cytokines involved in the mechanism of fatigue through the p38 MAPK regulatory pathway.
While we wait for the @decodemestudy.bsky.social #GWAS study results to be published 8/6/25 @ 7 pm GMT let us review these 2011 findings #ME/CFS #WASF3
Meta analysis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome through integration of clinical, gene expression, SNP and proteomic data
WASF3 disrupts mitochondrial respiration and may mediate exercise intolerance in myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome P. M. Heang et al. (2023) www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... #ME/CFS #WASF3 #Mitochondria
After extensive study, they noticed that Twinam’s body seemed to be producing more than the normal amount of a protein called WASF3. This protein, they discovered, was plugging up the process by which her body was trying to produce energy.

In 2023 a small group of NIH researchers, spearheaded by Dr P. Hwang made an important discovery that seems to explain one of the biological pieces in the disease we now call #ME/CFS. The paper was published in the prestigious PNAS medicalnewsbulletin.com/nih-scientis... #WASF3 #Mitochondria
