We’ve designed cities to move water out of sight.
Then we’re surprised when they flood and overheat.

The water from the experiment, strained in a tall jar.
We agreed that we wouldn’t want to drink that water even after straining. SJ suggested “Add soap to clean it,” while others agreed it would be bad for our friends the ducks, or fish. Some students remembered that we drink water from the lake, too, so we don’t want it getting dirty! #WorldWaterDay

Two photos in a collage labeled “refraction.” Top, a child’s face is widely distorted by the water in a large jar. Bottom, two students draw pictures and look at them through the water in the jar.
Today, on day four of our #WorldWaterDay learning, we experimented with refraction (how light bends through substances like water and glass). It helps us understand how fish hide from birds overhead. It also made us laugh… here is our friend looking through a jar, & 2 friends testing their drawings.
Screenshot includes three consecutive slides from a deck, all in blue watery backgrounds from a set of slides about World Water Day. Text reads: Wednesday Today we are going to read a story about protecting the water and learn about someone who spent her life protecting the water. Meet Josephine Mandamin Josephine was an Anishinabe First Nations grandmother, elder and founding member of the water protectors movement. She was a survivor of the Canadian Indian residential school system and founder of the Mother Earth Water Walkers. During her 77 years, she walked about 25,000 miles around the shorelines of all the Great Lakes, and other waterways of North America, carrying a bucket of water, to bring awareness to the need to protect the waters from pollution. Josephine Mandamin (Anishinaabemowin: Bridaasige-ba - "The one who comes with the light") (February 21,1942 - February 22, 2019) JOSEPHINE MANDAMIN”
Today, on day 3 of our #WorldWaterDay learning, we learned about a person who made it her life goal to fix what we learned about yesterday: communities & other living beings having to live with unclean, unsafe water. Like Terry Fox who we learned about in the fall, Josephine’s legacy carries on.
For #WorldWaterDay, Oxfam’s Fair Finance Asia & Transboundary Rivers of South Asia (TROSA) Programs, w/ Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), launched a report on barriers to climate finance in Bangladesh & the Philippines.
