Vital #wildlife habitat could be paved over and destroyed to make way for pipelines, mines, and industrial development because it would no longer be protected under the Clean Water Act. #WOTUS

A pivotal debate is unfolding over federal water protections. A proposed rollback of Waters of the U.S. rule could limit safeguards for wetlands that reduce flooding, protect wildlife, and keep waterways clean.

Critical freshwater and saltwater habitats that are not 'navigable' or have a 'continuous surface connection' are at risk of losing protections under new federal proposal to limit the Clean Water Act.

"The Proposed Rule would limit the scope of federal jurisdiction over the nation’s waters…[it] is unexpectedly vague and deferential on many details for Agencies to define the limits of the rule." #WOTUS #wetlands

The new proposal to narrow the definition of “waters of the U.S.” puts millions of acres of wetlands and streams at risk—threatening drinking water, flood protection & ecosystems.

"We can't protect the Bay's ecosystem and clean water if the law no longer recognizes the wetlands that make it possible," as our scientist Ian Wren said in a statement about the Trump admin's new #WOTUS proposal rolling back the #CleanWaterAct

The Obama admin widened the scope of the Clean Water Act to protect headwaters of rivers and smaller streams that aren’t always full of water. (A farmers’ advocacy group ran an ad campaign with rubber ducks to protest #EPA's definition: “If you can’t #FloatUS, it’s not a #WOTUS,” the ads declared.)
EPA's new draft rule further narrows “waters of the U.S.,” stripping protections from rivers, streams, wetlands, and drinking water. After last year’s Supreme Court rollback, this move puts communities, wildlife, and clean water at even greater risk.

Trump's promise was to remove 'unelected bureaucrats.' The reality is a system designed to replace non-partisan expertise with nothing but unquestioning, politically motivated loyalty.

Ever since the Clean Water Act became law in 1972, the definition of “waters of the U.S.” has been cloaked in controversy. This controversy is coming to a head again, and there is clearly a need to clarify the scope of protections. #WOTUS #TakeAction #Congress #clean #water ➡️ 📣 ow.ly/qQsV50VXQsm

"The Sackett decision is done. Another waters of the US rulemaking would be counterproductive. It would lead to more confusion, not clarity.
I urge EPA and the Corps instead to direct resources to implementing the existing rules."
