Three boats are anchored in the channel between Lions Park and Woy Woy Public Wharf. The water is reflectively still; there are a few puffy clouds. One of the boats is bluer than the sky and a rather odd shape (which is reflected in the water); the other two are plain white. The island on the far side of the channel — Pelican Island — is low and mangrove-covered. I grew up near here in the Woy Woy area.

A very Woy Woy pastoral (Woy Woy, NSW, January 2026).

A large white pelican with black feathers around the wings and a huge pink bill is standing close to a wooden picnic table, eyeing us off. It was much closer before I had turned around to photograph it. Behind is a young native fig tree, grass to the water's edge, a couple fishing at the edge, and a small ferry passing.

Ducks aren't the only birds that will mug you at Woy Woy. Back in 2018, this pelican tried the shake down at our picnic table.

Years ago, my father met us at Woy Woy and we got some fish and chips. Sitting by the water, Dad was waving his piece of fish around […]

Could not post this last night from my phone, so trying again from desktop.

This gang of thugs is on their way to find another unsuspecting victim to shake down.

Two little black shags swimming together. They are hunting for fish in a netted pool in the channel alongside the road to the picnic area.

Lots of shags about, flying back and forth, swimming in chase of little fish. Here's a couple we saw in the "pool" opposite Pelican island.

A pelican sits flattened out on a thick low pole in the water between a few boats at anchor.

Loads of pelicans too of course. The fish and chip shop always has a bunch on its roof. Here's a couple we saw on the way to/from the picnic table.

Two of the ducks that came to mug us. He has an iridescent green head and neck, white neck ring, chestnut brown chest, cream/brown back. She has a beautiful mottled brown and cream pattern. Both have red/orange feet.

Out the back of a supermarket, dozens of ducks take a rest from mugging picnickers and tourists, most sitting on the grass under trees. A few bin chickens (white ibis) poke at the grass in the background. Did not photograph the pair of little corellas making sweet love in a tree above.

The view from the picnic table. An expanse of water, edged by mangroves backed by paperbark trees across the water. We were entertained by little black and pied shags hunting for fish in front of us while we ate, plus passing larger pied shags, pelicans, terns, sooty oyster catchers, and a seal some distance away. And of course, hassled by ducks wandering around us constantly.

Today we caught a train down to Woy Woy for a picnic lunch with the ducks. A cold wind was blowing, so we rugged up warmly. Had the picnic area to ourselves, apart from the ducks.

The Gymea lilies in the bush alongside the train lines at Awaba are flowering […]

Oodles of pelicans enjoying the late afternoon sun.

Think I’ve used this photo before, but I rather like it.
