Democracy cannot be sustained on complaints alone 2026 must be the year we show up for municipal politics, if we want communities that reflect our needs and values, writes Wazhma Frogh

"Democracy cannot be sustained on complaints alone. It grows when people who care about their communities recognize they have a role in shaping them." #WRpoli www.therecord.com/opinion/colu...

From regional councillor to murder mystery author: Jane Mitchell on her new book Bad Council In-camera council meetings, a secretive development on the waterfront and the murder of a town councillor with a commemorative brick. These are plot points in a new murder mystery novel called Bad Cou...

I love Jane. I'm struggling to read for pleasure these days, but I did at least pick this up.

I'd rather she was on council, but if it means we get biting commentary on council in the form of murder mysteries, I can live with that.

In what has been a rather controversial process, selecting (who I believe is) the mother of Wilmot's mayor to Wilmot's Prime Minister's Path committee seems...unwise, no? #WRpoli www.therecord.com/news/waterlo...

Nov. 26: Regional council should vote no to police budget increase, cycling lanes save lives, and other letters to the editor Letters to the editor criticize Record columnist Luisa D’Amato for not paying attention to safety concerns for cyclists, and call for Waterloo regional council to turn down the police budget.

"Unequivocal commitment to policing when the social safety net is underfunded is apt reason for the Waterloo regional council to vote “No” to another astronomical increase to the police budget." -Judah Oudshoorn #WRpoli

“I’m trying to avoid the outrage, which I think we’re kidding ourselves if we think it’s not going to come, when we have a section here, aside from the church, that is completely surrounded on all sides by single family homes in a residential area. To be putting up seven- and nine-storey towers in this area with the minimal parking is just not appropriate development.”

While Cambridge Councillor Adam Cooper wants to "avoid the outrage", many in our community know that more affordable housing is exactly what we need, even if (or especially when!) that comes in the form of 7-9 storey 'towers'. Cooper comes across as completely #unserious on this issue. #WRpoli
