Her tails matched the color of her hair except for streaks of silver running through them where the colors of her upper and lower halves blended together. At first, I mistook her for a statue because she was frozen from shock.” Nasrin allows herself to sigh at the memory, but doesn’t let it stop her from picking up the 10 of diamonds and adding it to her sequence. “After a few moments she stammered out, ‘Greetings. I am Julrane of the Sea. You have come to the City of Shantih.’ When I struggled to sit up she asked, ‘Are you hurt? How may I help?’ “I translate, of course. Her people spoke in a type of song you wouldn’t understand even if you spoke any of the Middle Eastern languages that provided the lyrics.”

In Seattle, there were opium dens all over the waterfront area and up in Chinatown. The city was awash with opium smuggled aboard freighters from China. Sailors and socialites alike frequented establishments in basements and back rooms, staggering out in the morning, their eyes glassy and their jaws slack. I was not going to smoke opium. But I needed something. The pain kept me awake all night and washing dishes was agony. A pharmacy near the hotel sold me laudanum in a tiny cobalt blue vial for a penny. A pint of beer cost more than that. The pharmacist advised me to take it at bedtime. “One drop in each nostril and no more,” he’d said, “unless you don’t want to wake up again in the morning.” Laudanum was safer, but it was still opium.
