This week for #wallpaintingWednesday we are off to #Tewkesbury Abbey in #Gloucestershire for this colourful #crucifixion painted in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity.
Believed to be 14th century. An interesting double image of God the son and God the father one superimposed on the other

For #wallpaintingWednesday this week we are off to #Somerset and the wonderfully understated church of All Saints #SuttonBingham set in an isolated location near the reservoir. And full of the most wonderful early paintings. Probably c13th century. This is the #Dormition of the Virgin Mary

This week for #wallpaintingWednesday a rather gruesome image from the church at #CerneAbbas in #Dorset. One of 4 scenes from the life of #JohntheBaptist, this shows his beheading and his barely detectable head on a plate.
A very unusual painting, probably late 14th century - some say earlier

North-east of chancel #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset
The wall painting here must be mid to late C19 but it's curious that it's painted over. Normally Victorian work like this survives intact #WallsOnWednesday #WallPaintingWednesday

Mouse has seen comparatively recent photos showing the chancel gleaming white but there is no holding back the damp. Peeling whitewash reveals wall painting of which Mouse can find no mention #WallsOnWednesday #WallPaintingWednesday

It is #wallpaintingWednesday, one of our excuses to retreat from the cut and thrust of news coverage into something peaceful & mediaeval. Today we are in #Arezzo at the #BasilicaSanFrancesco admiring #PieroDellaFrancesco . His work was under wraps for around a decade (3 visits to Arezzo all in vain)

Interior of the 13th C Church of the Candelora shows arches defining the space and shallow arches framing medieval wall paintings all the way around. The most prominent space is covered by a large lenticular dome set on lily-shaped brackets, which transform the square of the connecting frame into an octagon, which in turn is supported by small triangular brackets. Five arched wall paintings are visible along the side and the Madonna and child is at the end.

A detailed, colourful fresco is shown, which is part of a series in the church detailing the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple (an important iconography as the church was dedicated to Candlemas). Here As if prefiguring the Passion of Christ, the Virgin, wearing a red maphorion and a blue tunic, tenderly gazes at the Child while holding his hand.
The Child, wearing a red tunic and a blue cloak (the reverse of the Mother's colours and clearly symbolic), gazes toward the Mother and holds a basket of eggs in his left hand.
The image is framed by a motif of foliage enclosed in a further red frame.
This depiction is apparently almost identical to a fresco in the Cathedral of Prizren, Serbia, dating back to around 1230, in which the Child, in the Virgin's arms, draws from a basket. The Serbian inscription refers to the Child as Krimitiel (corresponding to Tropheus in Greek), meaning "nourishment."
Christ is therefore represented here as spiritual nourishment, in remembrance of the Eucharistic sacrifice aimed at the salvation of humanity.

For #wallpaintingWednesday today we are off to #StAlbans in #Hertfordshire. Better known for its #Roman remains the abbey boasts some mediaeval gems of its own. Here, almost overlooked, a painting on a pillar of #StWilliam of #York.
Probably late 13th century.

For today's #wallpaintingWednesday an #Annunciation probably 15th century from St #Thomas and St #Edmund Church in #Salisbury, #Wiltshire.
Often overlooked because tourists (not just members of the #GRU) flock to #SalisburyCathedral instead, the church is well worth a visit too.

Image shows a much eroded St Christopher. Just visible at the top left is the hermit and his shack, but clear at the bottom are Christopher's lower legs, and some very fun fish. The painting appears to be a palimpsest and there is the suggestion that another, earlier St Christopher lay underneath.

Close up of the fish. Each one seems to be a distinct species. And look at their noses!

Detail from a #crucifixion scene uncovered below white plaster at #Turvey Church in #Bedfordshire. This shows the face of #StJohn. Some suggest the painting is 14th century but personally that feels far too late to me. 13th (even late 12th) century seems more likely?
Thoughts?

The merest hint of wall painting to the left and right of the arch to the south transept. It's not clear how much is preserved but the original scheme must have been extensive

this week for #wallpaintingWednesday we have a martyrdom of King and St #Edmund from #Troston Church in #Suffolk. The church also has a fine St George and is tucked away in a largely forgotten corner of Suffolk. Well worth a visit.
Paintings probably 14th century though nobody seems very certain.
