A few last moments from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg: The place to find the peak of Romanesque architecture #StAndrewStogursey. A cruciform former Abbey church with four Romanesque crossing arches and beautiful carved detail. This church needs attention

There was only one gate with an overthrow on the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #HuntspillToKilve leg and it's a winner #StAndrewStogursey #Thursgate #IronworkThursday. Somehow those pesky #SomersetFayries got in on the act

For once the #MouseFavouritePhoto was hard to choose not because of the size of the shortlist but because for all of its Romanesque features #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset is not hugely photogenic. Sadly the neglect and clutter permeates every photo. This however is wonderful

And as #FontsMeanFarewell, what of the church of #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset? To Mouse this is a church of real architectural and historical significance, but sadly unknown, overlooked and neglected. Full of #ChurchClutter. For architecture Mouse give it 4/5 #MusVisit🐭🐭🐭🐭

Mouse leave you with a little something for #RomanesqueRiday (thank you Rufus) from #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset

This is an important and rather overlooked Norman Romanesque church. It has a large amount of Romanesque carving to the arch capitals. But how much has been replaced?

Between the band of saltire crosses and the cable moulding are four equally spaced human faces. They are primitively carved and generate much speculation about their meaning #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset #FontsOnFriday

North transept #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday

Big old Norman tub font. An unusual survivor. Band of saltire decoration around lip, wide cable moulding to mid section. Faces carved into the flat surface between saltires and cable moulding

West of nave #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset for #FontsOnFriday

Somewhat forlorn C12 font. Goblet style. Shallow basin, wide stem with angled fluting and roughly carved thin convex base. Groove about half way down basin which then tapers to meet stem. Chevron pattern around taper

Time for a toot on the #FridayPipes from #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset. Very colourful but if it was Mouse she'd have bought one that fitted. The random plastic chair (Mouse left it in for effect) symptomatic of the need for a good tidy up and clear out here. East bay, north aisle

Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset. All of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share over the week: Fine Perpendicular west window. Although the glass is (to Mouse at least) rather undistinguished the effect of the colours on the light makes up for it

Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset. All of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share over the week: sedilia and piscina to south wall of chancel. A purely Victorian concoction shamelessly melding Romanesque with Gothic... Gothmanesque maybe

Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset. All of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share over the week: rather nice trefoil piscina. South chapel. East end of south wall so probably in-situ. You can see the basin peeking out under the later wooden door

Mouse's #FridaysBitsAndPieces from #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset. All of the bits and pieces Mouse forgot to share over the week: Rather crude C15 panels to the soffit and return of the blocked up arch in the nave (with the tiniest, tiniest #ChurchWiringNightmare)

Nave. Adjacent to crossing arch #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset for #AdoorableThursday

To the left, the blocked access to the rood turret (external). To the right a blocked large pointed arch with carved panels to the soffit. But where did it go? That's the question. #AdoorNoMore

Nave. Adjacent to crossing arch #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset for #AdoorableThursday

A #DoorInMidAir but sadly also #AdoorNoMore. This and the accompanying rood screen and loft (now lost) would have been part of the late C15 nave rebuild. It would only be used for 50 years or so

South transept. South elevation #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset for #AdoorableThursday

Simple planked and filleted door, probably now redundant. Set in a similarly simple chamfered pseudo-4-centred arch. Although the masonry looks ancient this probably dates to the C15 remodeling

South #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset

A tiny light red door sits at the end of the south transept. If the original priory had a cloister it would have been on this side of the building and it makes sense for it to have extended from the transept

Gate, overthrow, cusped pointed lights and, though Mouse says so herself lined up like a good'n

The noticeboard says 'Stoke Courcy' a historical name that became Stogursey. Say them one after the other

Is this too pale to go in Mouse's #ChurchesWithRedDoors file, do you think?

It's claimed that the nave of #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset was rebuilt C15, if true it means that this Norman Romanesque doorway was preserved and re-set #AdoorableThursday

This very Victorian stained glass is a very clever design in this context. Mouse sure you can see why

South of chancel #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset for #WindowsOnWednesday

Don't get too excited it's claimed that this single centre light is a C19 insertion. Interestingly though that wall thickness is very typically Norman and yet the chancel is said to have been rebuilt C19

Is there a day for biers in the same way there is for windows, doors, gates and wood? If there isn't there should be

This C19 bier is interesting. It has a wagon roof framework (did that once hold fabric?) that looks like a #MortSafe #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset for #Woodensday

East of chancel #StAndrewStogursey #Somerst for #WindowsOnWednesday

Three stepped single centred lights with nook shafts and common label. All C19 and the best Mouse can say is that it's a homage to the Norman Romanesque origins of the church and the result of a chancel rebuild

South chapel (looking west) #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset for #woodensday

Very fine C19 wagon roof. Planked panels, carved bosses at intersections between ribs and purlins (heraldic along ridge and floriate to either side). Hollow cornice decorated with fleurons and brattished

Nave #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset #woodensday

Particularly fine C19 roof with lovely openwork above the collars (too high up to appreciate from the ground). It's designed to give the impression of a hammer beam roof but the braces don't rest on corbels but rather support angels

The wall painting here must be mid to late C19 but it's curious that it's painted over. Normally Victorian work like this survives intact #WallsOnWednesday #WallPaintingWednesday
