A Norman Romanesque masterclass in decoration. From outside in; roll moulding exposed between the teeth of opposing chevrons (with carved petals in roundels), cavetto with nail head and roll moulding enclosed in pellet spiral. Class dismissed #HolyTrinityBristol #RomanesqueRiday

One for #RomanesqueRiday (thanks Rufus) from #HolyTrinityBristol

Gatehouse situated between the Cathedral and (now) College. Mouse would have photographed the lovely interior but there were some 'gentlemen' drinking Buckie inside. Suitable for an old Abbey though Mouse suppose

Bunting and fairy lights around the Norman Romanesque arch of #StMaryPortbury #NorthSomerset. The inner order is clearly C12, but if Mouse honest (she always is) she a bit suspicious of the provenance of the decorated orders. Nice though. #RomanesqueRiday (thanks Rufus)

The only possible choice for #RomanesqueRiday (thanks, Rufus) from the #ScamperDownTheSomersetCoast #PortisheadToWestonSuperMare. This Transitional chancel arch from the crossing drips with Romanesque carving which is steeped in iconography and symbolism. Truly beautiful

Mouse leave you with a little something for #RomanesqueRiday (thank you Rufus) from #StAndrewStogursey #Somerset

This is an important and rather overlooked Norman Romanesque church. It has a large amount of Romanesque carving to the arch capitals. But how much has been replaced?

Wide, roughly hewn horizontal planks showing that this is a double planked door. Mouse suspects that the seemingly random fixings are u-shaped nails. For more on this follow #KewstokeSouthDoor

There's a kind of Simpsonesque quality to this beak head. It looks like it's just eaten some shorts

It's late but it's never too late to enjoy #RomanesqueRiday (thank you Rufus). When you consider the statues of classical Rome a thousand years earlier these Norman Romanesque faces seem so primitive... and yet they have personality #StAndrewClevedon #Somerset #FridaysFacesInStone

Mouse always on the lookout for hints of the Norman past and here's a little clue. A section of Norman Romanesque pellet decoration above a much abused segmental arch with roll moulding around the intrados #StAndrewLoxton #Somerset for #RomanesqueRiday (thank you Rufus) #Spolia

Beak head. A highly stylised carving that you can find on Norman Romanesque masonry in many places

Fine C12 doorway. Despite the awful pointing making it look to the contrary this seems to be in situ and largely original.

More classic Romanesque for #RomanesqueRiday. Missing pier from 2-light window. But look closely, both jambs and string course have saw tooth decoration yet this is the third stage of the tower and barely visible from the ground with the naked eye #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichCasle #GoodrichKeep

A little something for #RomanesqueRiday. Perfect 2-light Norman Romanesque window with circular headed lights and central cylindrical pier set in a circular headed 'frame'. An archetype #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichCastle #GoodrichKeep

Tiny oculus, centre above strip pilaster, with a roundel carved from two pieces of stone. Compare that to the splay of the interior. Oculus to the left has lost its surround. Very exciting #RomanesqueRiday

East elevation of the Great Tower (interior) #ChepstowCastle

Deeply splayed Romanesque oculus (should be oculi, maybe?), one interrupted by the insertion of an Early English arch part of a later vaulted roof (that's a whole nother story) #RomanesqueRiday

Simple Romanesque arcade to second stage; circular arches on square (section) pier and abacus. These probably extended around the other walls. Residual plaster shows they were blind, not windows. #RomanesqueRiday
