Farewell #GoodrichCastle with your silver grey keep and sturdy towers, your glowing red sandstone and pointed arches. Mouse miss you even now #HeidiAtGoodrich
There seemed to be a common view that the medieval period was one of filth and dirt but this seems to contradict that. This lavabo is in the 'Great Chamber' basement. It's sited close to the well in the courtyard above. Running water and a drain? #HeidiAtGoodrich #MedievalLavabo
Mouse's top three #InterestingThingsAtGoodrich Number 1: The prevalence of the lavabo. The evidence would suggest every chamber had one. Contrary to our view of the medieval period, perhaps? Certainly mouse had never seen this in a castle before #HeidiAtGoodrich #MedievalLavabo
Mouse's top three #InterestingThingsAtGoodrich Number 2: The uniform architecture. The segmental pointed arch is the signature feature of the castle. Many are double chamfered. Some rough hewn, some beautifully carved but obviously someone was a big fan #HeidiAtGoodrich
Mouse's top three #InterestingThingsAtGoodrich Number 3: The Norman keep. Build of grey conglomerate and with pilaster strips, clasping buttresses, sawtooth moulding and Romanesque windows it's an amazing survivor #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichKeep
As #FireplacesMeanFarewell what of #GoodrichCastle? Mouse loved it and is about to share her #InterestingThingsAtGoodrich. In the meantime she highly recommend a visit and being a fan of a pasty definitely recommends one of these! Well done @englishheritage.bsky.social (get posting) #HeidiAtGoodrich
More classic Romanesque for #RomanesqueRiday. Missing pier from 2-light window. But look closely, both jambs and string course have saw tooth decoration yet this is the third stage of the tower and barely visible from the ground with the naked eye #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichCasle #GoodrichKeep
A little something for #RomanesqueRiday. Perfect 2-light Norman Romanesque window with circular headed lights and central cylindrical pier set in a circular headed 'frame'. An archetype #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichCastle #GoodrichKeep
From modern walkway across south-east tower. One of what would have been two entrances to this level of the tower. Typical but rather roughly hewn segmental pointed arch. There is a #MedievalLavabo to the right (as facing) #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichTowers
Lavabo next to modern aerial walkway. South-east tower. The large drain is distinct from a piscina. Mouse think this drain to ground. Mouse suspect that every chamber in this castle had one of these. Anyone have any other examples? #MedievalLavabo #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichTowers
Looking across and down into south-east tower from modern walkway. Shows the remains of the particularly fine C14 fireplaces #FireplaceFriday #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichTowers
Looking up from the basement of the south-east tower. Both levels above are high status accommodation. You can just make out in the right photo a #MedievalLavabo on each floor one directly above the other (probably with a common drain) #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichTowers
Basement of south-east tower showing steps down from adjacent range and entrance to floor above. Recesses for joists clearly show floor levels in buildings like this. On a more aesthetic note the red sandstone and green algae give amazing texture #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichTowers
More of the south-west tower at #GoodrichCastle. Mouse suspects this is a lavabo. A medieval stone wash basin set into the wall. But Mouse never seen one in a castle chamber before. Any other examples? @CastleHunter perchance? #MedievalLavabo #GoodrichTowers #HeidiAtGoodrich
More of the south-west tower at #GoodrichCastle. But wait. What is that tell-tale shape to the right of the upper floor window? A piscina? But in a chamber? #GoodrichTowers #HeidiAtGoodrich
Mouse love ruins like these. You can mentally assemble an image of the original. Lower two floors look as if they have a defensive role. The upper floor high status accommodation shown by the fireplace hood (very C14) #FireplaceFriday #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichTowers: South-west
Fairly authentic looking gates to the basement level of #GoodrichKeep #Thursgate #IronworkThursday #HeidiAtGoodrich
Norman keep from south-west end of 'Great Hall' #GoodrichGreatHall Part IV of IV #HeidiAtGoodrich
Between 'Great Hall' and keep it is supposed that there was a building that housed the kitchens, now largely disappeared
Remains of hearth (and chimney) #GoodrichGreatHall Part III of IV #HeidiAtGoodrich
There is a strong view that a hall has a fireplace at the end and a chamber has it on the side. Here the chimney is on the wall external to the castle as one may expect but this is a side wall
External castle wall/wall of the 'Great Hall' #GoodrichGreatHall Part II of IV #HeidiAtGoodrich
The hall has just three windows on this elelvation. The heads are double chamfered segmental pointed although they look roll moulded in places due to the erosion of the red sandstone
This space has been identified as the 'Great Hall' of #GoodrichCastle with the remains of the south-west tower far end. A C14 addition or at least rebuilding. The Great Chamber is behind us #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichGreatHall Part I of IV. The grey skies of summer
South east elevation of building connecting the Great Chamber to another range of buildings at right angles to the 'vestibule'. A little late for #WallsOnWednesday Part II of II #HeidiAtGoodrich #WindowsOnWednesday
For those who like this kind of thing. Surely not.. a coating?
Base of the keep. A little late for #WallsOnWednesday Part I of II #HeidiAtGoodrich #WindowsOnWednesday
For those who like this kind of thing. The Norman keep is grey not red like the rest of the castle because it's made of conglomerate. At the base though red sandstone and tile
When you compare this window seat with the one in the chapel, the immense difference in wall thickness becomes immediately apparent #HeidiAtGoodrich #WindowsOnWednesday
Chambers above castle entrance and chapel. A little late for #WindowsOnWednesday Part II (of II) #HeidiAtGoodrich
This level maintains the same trefoil lights as the chapel set in what appear to be Goodrich's signature double chamfered segmental arch.
Castle chapel. A little late for #WindowsOnWednesday Part I (of II) #HeidiAtGoodrich
Mouse got a bit distracted by the Great Chamber but this is an interesting window. Trefoil single light with triangular rere arch set in triangular arch niche (With a little plaster thrown in)
Well now. That's an interesting feature in the 'vestibule' under the arcade. Kind of familiar. Discover Mouse's interpretation tomorrow! #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichGreatChamber: Part 6 of 6
A 'recreation' of the Great Chamber from the interpretation board. Mouse suspicious about the use of this space. No fireplace on the external wall for a start. If this was what it's claimed it would have been opulently furnished #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichGreatChamber: Part 5 of 6
Detail of the arches at the north westerly end of the Great Chamber showing quite how finely carved they are. We're not talking cheap here #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichGreatChamber: Part 4 of 6
Arcade from the basement level (which would have housed a kitchen and stores, perhaps) #HeidiAtGoodrich #GoodrichGreatChamber: Part 3 of 6
