In an attempt to deceive enemy planes, the flight deck of the Japanese aircraft carrier Zuihō was camouflaged to appear as a battleship making a starboard turn. It didn't work. U.S. Navy aircraft sank Zuihō during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944.

It's #WarshipWednesday! #OTD December 18 1897, the #Suma-class protected cruiser #Akashi #明石 was launched at #Yokosuka Naval Arsenal. Akashi had mechanical problems for most of her first five years, and required so much maintenance that she was relegated to the reserve fleet in 1902. 1/5

It’s #WarshipWednesday! The battleship #Satsuma was laid down at #Yokosuka Naval Arsenal on the 15th of May 1905 and commissioned 25 March 1910. She did not see action in the #FWW but was part of a squadron that took custody of the #Carolines and #Palau from #Germany in 1914.
It's #WarshipWednesday! #OTD Nov. 20th 1945, #IJN Ise was struck from naval records following her sinking in July of the same year. Built in #Kobe and commissioned in 1917, #Ise played minor roles during her career, and was largely obsolete by the beginning of #WW2. #navalhistory #IJNHistory #Japan
