Center right, a Carolina Chickadee is perched on a small branch of tree, facing left, looking right. These birds are very similar in size, shape and color to Black-capped Chickadees with their black caps, black bibs and white bellies and stark white cheeks. Where they differ is the Carolina has less white on wings and their territories rarely overlap. Though, where they do, hybridization does occur. Whenever I hear a Carolina Chickadee's call, they sound as if on speed... saying their "Chickadee dee dee" pattern at a much faster rate than their Black-capped cousins.
